Couch to 5K? Me? 1/4/09

Posted 01-04-2009 at 07:26 AM by maria40nc
I've never been a runner; never even gave it a thought. I always thought that running was for people in better shape than me.

Discovery Health channel is running a new program called, "Could You Survive." Three overweight, out-of-shape people had to save a loved one from a wrecked car, then run 1 mile to call 911 within 12 min. There was one woman (Abbie) and two men. The woman had the best time, but none of them made it.

They trained with marines for only 4 weeks and tried again. This time Abbie was the only one to make it under 12 min; but they all did much better. Abbie went on to train and ran a 5k!!! And I thought, "if she can do it, I can do it too!!!"

I don't really know where/how to start, but I'm going to do it. I found a race here in town on May 2; so that's my target!

Cool story! I want to check that out. Hopefully they air it again.

I've been kicking around the idea of training for a half-marathon. I have never cared much for running, but after dropping some pounds last year, it wasn't so bad.

I think it would be fun to enter a major race like the Boston or New York half marathon just to say I tried it. However, I plan to start local to make sure I can hack it. At a minimum, a 5K would be a major milestone.

Keep working towards that target date!

It's a new series. Each one has three different people with a different challenge. Here's the first episode.

COULD YOU SURVIVE A CAR ACCIDENT IN A REMOTE AREA?

I wish I could email Abbie to tell her she inspired me!

Well common and join the new Couch to 5K Challenge with us!

Couch to 5K - anyone want to start next week?

There is a training program that takes 9 weeks, and we found a podcast that talks you through the whole thing. I did the first session this morning on my treadmill. It's music with a voice overlaid to tell you when to walk and when to run in intervals. It builds you up slowly over 9 weeks.

I think I'm so excited because this is totally out of character for me! It will be such a sense of accomplishment afterwards.
