The Farmers’ Market Effect

Vouchers that permit low-income women to shop at a local farmers’ market increase fruit and vegetable consumption in poor families, a new study shows.

The research, published this month in the American Journal of Public Health, comes just as states are making important changes to national nutrition programs.

For years, the federally-funded Women, Infants and Children (W.I.C.) program, which subsidizes food purchases for low-income women and young children, hasn’t included fruits and vegetables, except for fruit juice and...

YOU: and The Information Age

Posted 02-15-2008 at 12:53 PM by jezzie
Bottom line: Privacy statements are basically letting you know you don't have any.

I'm sure there is a master computer somewhere that knows when I stopped buying cigarettes,
what I put in my coffee, how much gas I use a month, what I read and what size I wear.

Yet for my last hospitalization no less than six people asked me who my primary physician was.
(Same one for 15 years and I'd been in this hospital twice before.)
And every visit to the doctor the same nurse asks me what medications I'm taking and how much.

YOU: Sowing and Reaping

Posted 02-15-2008 at 04:27 AM by jezzie

True enough, the sun shines on the saint and the sinner alike, and too often it seems that the wicked prosper.

But we can say with certainty that, with the individual as with the nation, the flourishing of the wicked is an illusion, for,...

Many present day low-carbers have an advantage over the mid nineties low-carbers.

We didn't get sick with the Induction Flu so many complain about now. But they sure are luckier when going off plan.

Typical 1997 post: Went off plan last night for a celebration. Had Fettuccine Alfredo, followed by Tiramisu.
Sooo delicious. On the way home we stopped at Dairy Queen for a soft cone. I'll be up a pound or two tomorrow but I have no regrets.

YOU: Cupids and Hearts

Posted 02-14-2008 at 02:17 AM by jezzie

The history of Valentine's Day is obscure, and further clouded by various fanciful legends.

The holiday's roots are in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, a fertility celebration commemorated annually on February 15.

Pope Gelasius I recast this pagan festival as a Christian feast day circa 496, declaring February 14 to be St. Valentine's Day.

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome.

When Emperor...
