YOU: Fit may outweigh Fat

Posted 01-13-2008 at 03:07 AM by jezzie
"You can't tell just by looking at someone if they are fit," says Steven Blair, a professor in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. "You can certainly be fat, even obese, and still be fit."

Blair and colleagues assessed the aerobic fitness, body mass index and waist circumference of 2,603 adults, ages 60 and older, and followed them for 12 years.

During that time, there were 450 deaths. Among findings in today's Journal of the American Medical Association:

YOU: and food preferences

1989 Gallup Poll: 35% said they were "meat and potatoes type, about 34% of people said they were a "chicken and broccoli type;" 12% "brown rice and vegetables type;" and 10% "pasta and salad type."
Five percent were "burgers and fries type," while 3% were "pizza and soda type."

( I wonder if there was an "all of the above" option. )

2003 Harris Interactive survey, 2.8 percent of those surveyed said they never eat meat, poultry, or fish/seafood.

A majority of the vegetarians...

YOU: and Loving Oatmeal

Posted 01-11-2008 at 04:08 AM by jezzie
Almost every day I have the same breakfast. I'm having a love affair with oatmeal.

I like the old-fashioned or steel-cut oatmeal with cinnamon and honey (usually buckwheat or wildflower honey).

Recent studies suggest eating oatmeal may:

* Reduce the risk for elevated blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, and weight gain

* Reduce LDL cholesterol during weight-loss

* Provide favorable changes in the physical characteristics of LDL cholesterol particles, making them less susceptible to oxidation (oxidation is thought...

YOU: Thinking about hunger

Posted 01-10-2008 at 07:03 AM by jezzie
• People who eat an apple about 15 minutes before lunch consume an average of 187 fewer calories at the meal than when they have applesauce, apple juice or nothing at all. This calorie savings includes the calories from the apple.

• Men and women who have 1½ to 2 cups of vegetable soup before a meal consume about 134 calories less at the meal than when they don't have a bowl of the broth-based soup. That includes the soup calories.

• Women who eat a large salad (about 3 cups) before lunch consume 12% fewer calories at the meal (salad calories included) than when they...

YOU: and the feel of the wind

Posted 01-09-2008 at 06:58 AM by jezzie
What a glorious day. 60* ..... and oh so windy.
It's a thinking day, a dreaming day, a reading day.

Quote:
The Wind

He shouts in the sails of the ships at sea,
He steals the down from the honeybee,
He makes the forest trees rustle and sing,
He twirls my kite till it breaks its string.

Laughing, dancing, sunny wind,
Whistling, howling, rainy wind,
North, South, East and West,
Each is the wind I like the best.
