YOU: Pass the Blame Game

YOU: Pass the Blame Game

Childhood Obesity: Blame the low fat people. Blame the low carb people.
Both had their origins in the '70's so just toss a coin.

Blame the sugar industry, dairy, corn farmers, Kelloggs, McDonalds.
And of course the favorite target of all. - Blame 'the big bad government'.
(If people can make a connection they will blame Pharmaceuticals.)

Individual accountability? It's not my fault.
Parents learning to say the word no? Too much effort.
Getting kids off their behinds so they can move something...

YOU: Taking Time for Coffee

Posted 02-01-2008 at 04:16 AM by jezzie
I love reading Judith Warner in the New York Times.
The subject today: Coffee. Here is an excerpt:

I’d had a feeling for some time that there was something worth writing about coffee. My attachment to it. My desire to draw my children into it.

My repugnance for a world where, when people stop by your house, on the way from there to there with never a moment for here, they stand in the doorway, cell phone in one hand, water bottle in the other, too peripatetic to even entertain the notion of sitting down for a warm drink.

To whom much is given, much is expected.

My heroes have been humanitarians, philanthropists, animal welfare activists, environmentalists

Some of my heroes: Queen Rania, Susan Berresford, Bill and Melinda Gates, Oprah, Muhammad Yunus,
Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, Al Gore, Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, Greg Mortenson, Angelina Jolie, Bono.

Quote:
Wild animals never kill for sport. Man is the only one to whom

the torture and death of his fellow-creatures is amusing in itself.

YOU: Thinking About Education

Posted 01-30-2008 at 10:27 AM by jezzie
Education in the USA ...

"Students in the richest country on earth are in 24th place in math.
That's behind Canada, Germany, France, Korea … but also smaller, poorer
countries like Poland, Hungary and Slovakia.

With a net worth of about $51 billion, Microsoft founder and world's
richest man, Bill Gates, and his wife, Melinda, are determined to use
their fortune to change the crisis in American schools.

Through their influential Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, they are trying
to revolutionize an education...

YOU: Not Quite a Doctor

Posted 01-30-2008 at 05:29 AM by jezzie
On the subject of amateur doctors ...

Pseudo doctors with Google MD degrees abound.
So I take all medical opinions offered on the Internet with a grain of salt.

The problem is that patients can find too much information - and often they don’t have the expertise to make sense of it. People are exposed to story after story on Web sites, BB's and in chat rooms.

That echo chamber of opinion slowly becomes a reality.

There’s much information, and misinformation, in medicine. Especially on the Internet. One major responsibility...
