My community was named for the cascade in Wappingers Creek.

According to local legend, New York City merchants Francis Rombout and Gulian Verplanck bought land from the Wappinger Indians.

Rombout bargained for "all the land he could see", then climbed to the top of Mount Beacon.

His land grant included what is now the city of Beacon and the towns of Wappinger, Fishkill and East Fishkill.

There are about 30,000 people in my town. Approximately 8,000 of the 30,000 reside in the Village.

YOU: So Grateful to the Humane Society

Posted 02-17-2008 at 03:39 AM by jezzie
Two former slaughterhouse workers were charged this weekend with abusing ailing cattle.

They were seen in a Humane Society video, which showed workers kicking, shocking and otherwise abusing "downer" animals that were apparently too sick or injured to walk into the slaughterhouse.

Crippled and sick animals were being shoved with forklifts.

"The facts of this case are horrendous," the DA said. "It makes your stomach turn to see what they did to these cows."

For years, the federally-funded Women, Infants and Children (W.I.C.) program, which subsidizes food purchases for low-income women and young children, hasn’t included fruits and vegetables, except for fruit juice and...

YOU: and The Information Age

Posted 02-15-2008 at 01:53 PM by jezzie
Bottom line: Privacy statements are basically letting you know you don't have any.

I'm sure there is a master computer somewhere that knows when I stopped buying cigarettes,
what I put in my coffee, how much gas I use a month, what I read and what size I wear.

Yet for my last hospitalization no less than six people asked me who my primary physician was.
(Same one for 15 years and I'd been in this hospital twice before.)
And every visit to the doctor the same nurse asks me what medications I'm taking and how much.

We're...

YOU: Sowing and Reaping

Posted 02-15-2008 at 05:27 AM by jezzie
If the past has taught us anything it is that every cause brings its effect, every action has a consequence.

We Chinese have a saying: "If a man plants melons he will reap melons; if he sows beans, he will reap beans." And this is true of everyone's life; good begets good, and evil leads to evil.

True enough, the sun shines on the saint and the sinner alike, and too often it seems that the wicked prosper.

But we can say with certainty that, with the individual as with the nation, the flourishing of the wicked is an illusion, for,...
