At six foot six, with his tanned face and steely blue eyes, Glenn may be close to seventy years old, but he is every inch the American cowboy. With Glenn and his daughter Kelly, we saddled up mules and rode up steep canyons to nearly 6 thousand feet.

We could see more than 50 miles in every direction, as Glenn pointed out the craggy outcropping where he took the very first picture of a live jaguar in the United States in 1996.

Maya Angelou on the subject of complaining:

Angelou says that when "whiners" would come into her grandmother's store in Arkansas, she would go through a routine that would begin by quietly beckoning Maya to come closer.

Then she would bait the "whiner" customer with "How are you doing today, Brother Thomas?"

As the complaining gushed forth she would nod or make eye contact with her granddaughter to make sure Maya heard what was being said.

Remembering Earth Day

Using a crockpot

I wanted a bit of science, a bit of calculation to decide on energy efficiency. It turns out that crock pots have heat conductive linings so you can cook at a steady 200 F.

Because you put all the ingredients in and then turn your back on it, you never lose any steam or heat from repeatedly lifting the lid. Opening your conventional oven, even just a couple of times loses a lot of heat. Okay, but what about the actual power draw?

I finally came across a website from a power corporation in New Zealand that gave a chart of appliances...

YOU: Walking for Weight Loss Experiment

Today I begin a little eighteen week walking experiment.

Newest low carb theory is that exercise does not produce weight loss because it just makes you eat more.
(Actually it isn't so new. Kimmer didn't believe in exercise for weight loss either.)

I'm not an 'expert du jour'.

My personal observations and experiences lead me to respectfully disagree with Mr. Taubes and Ms. Kimmer.

Time will tell.

In my first six week segment I will walk thirty minutes every day and eat 'as usual'.
'As usual' is about 1950...
