Low Carb Mediterranean

Posted 08-20-2008 at 10:09 AM by fluffybear2
I really thought the Mediterranean Diet would work for me. It WAS delicious alright---too delicious! However I gained weight on it. So now I am returning to Atkins. So far I've lost 5 lbs. on Atkins in a week. So I am happy. Not as many veggies as I like or normally eat, but I have decided to take the good things about the Meditarranean diet---olives, olive oil, good cheese and good meat along with some low carb veggies such as zucchini & eggplant and forego the BREAD. Sort of a Low Carb Mediterranean Diet.

How the Mediterranean "diet" began...........

Posted 07-25-2008 at 10:42 AM by fluffybear2
In 1947, the Rockefeller Foundation arrived in Crete ready to offer humanitarian assistance to the war-ravaged islanders. As part of the Foundation's mission, it documented the islanders' meager diet. Then, Cretans lived on a subsistence regimen of wild greens, fruits, legumes, bread and barley rusks, little protein and plenty of their native olive oil. While the Rockefeller Foundation was appalled at what seemed like the diet of utter despair, they were equally surprised to notice that the islanders were uncannily healthy. There was no malnutrition on Crete after those war-torn years.

FINALLY--food that tastes good!

Posted 07-24-2008 at 08:25 AM by fluffybear2
After trying Medifast, Nutrisystem and various other diets, I have finally found a plan with really great tasting food. While Atkins food tasted good (why not its mainly REAL food) I found it restrictive. I can eat just about ANYTHING on the Mediterranean diet. That doesn't mean it's a good idea, but there are no real hard and fast rules. It is not a diet you can "fall off the wagon" on. It's just good advice on how to eat healthy. To be honest, the so-called "Mediterranean Diet" is not what most people think of when you say the word "diet." Sure you can lose weight...

Eating like an Egyptian (or a Greek, or an Italian, etc)

Posted 07-22-2008 at 09:50 AM by fluffybear2
What is it abut the countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea that makes their eating so healthy? For one thing, the climate is just about perfect. An almost year-round sunny growing season with just the right amount of moisture helps ensure an abundance of healthy crops. Both France and Italy are known for their delicious wines. Red wine contains a phytonutrient that is an anti-carcinogen. Consuming only one glass of red wine, or if you prefer, red grape juice daily may help you fight off cancer. Many other fruits which cannot be grown further north also are very beneficial to health. Another...

Ditching Diets

Posted 07-21-2008 at 08:05 AM by fluffybear2
Although I still read about diets and people who lose using various diets, I KNOW that strict diets are not for me. Why? Because there is no "one size fits all" diet out there. There is:
NO MAGIC BULLET.

I am a fan of the Joy Fit Club on the TODAY SHOW on NBC. It does not recommend any specific diet and showcases people who have lost weight any number of ways, as long as it is healthy. Nutritionist Joy Bauer teaches people the basics of healthy nutrition and encourages exercise. No matter what anyone says, losing weight is simply a matter of calories IN and calories...
