Atkins + Alcohol = FAIL!

Hi y'all,

New to this forum scene but very familiar with Atkins in general. I have practically lived on it for several years and maintained a very healthy size until recently. Over the past few years I discovered how much I love alcohol. (Particularly vodka and wine) Well, the weight crept up on me because I was consuming so much alcohol that it was the first thing my body burned for fuel. I couldn't figure out why I was gaining when I was so disciplined when it came to my eating. Well, this past June I forged on into Alcohol Rehab and changed my life forever. So, here I am, back into Atkins land where it will definitely work for me now and I'm very excited. So with all that said, let me introduce myself. I'm Aimee from Florida! Introduce yourselves and say hi! I love making new friends! We are all in this journey together!

Alcohol is always the first thing our body will metabolize. So long as it's in your system you aren't burning anything else. It's like pressing a "pause" button on weight loss. Or, if you're over eating while drinking (or drinking too much to often) consider it a "rewind".

Welcome to the forum!

JustJessie, if you must drink, I would recommend something like vodka and diet soda. Stay away from sugary, fruity drinks.

Aimee, I was sooooo happy to stumble across your post. I have the same problem with wine.
I did Atkins quit succesfully about 10yrs ago then had a few babies. Never went back then had gastric bypass 5 yrs ago. Things went very well with all that until couple years ago I discovered a love/hate relationship with wine. What bypass patients call a "transfer addiction"...from food to something else, usually alcohol. I slowly increased glasses til I was 4 a night!!! And sure the weight crept on. I've regretfully regained 50# of the 113# I lost. :-(
This past Saturday I decided enough was enough and I got rid of alcohol in house and bought some clean foods.
4th day into Induction and I've lost 5#'s and my tummy already feels less bloated!

I had a single gin & club soda yesterday. It's only 110 calories. I burnt that off I did with all the walking I did in Manhattan.

Agree with Atkins + Alcohol = Fail. I just started back on the program today, after a couple of years of consuming various spirits. Another issue I ran into with excessive alcohol was poor food choices. So, I'm cleaning up the mess I've made and getting back on track!

I was young and dumb my junior year in high school and started drinking. I gained almost 100 lbs in 2 years. Since then I pretty much maintained that weight. I now have a love hate relationship with alcohol. Recently I've just realised I'm 21 and theres now excuse for my weight. I'd like to actually have fun shopping again, instead of feeling ashamed because of my size. So I've cut out alcohol because it doesn't help me one bit!
