Question about Ketosis Test Strips

Hi all,

For those of you who've succeeded in losing weight and have used the ketosis test strips, were you able to "produce" the dark colors on the strips right away?

I'm barely in ketosis (according to the strips) and I'm wondering if that's OK.

Thanks!

i have been on induction for about 3 months and have lost 25 lbs, and about 3" on my waist.

Most of the time, the sticks show I am at 15, which is small. Occasionally, I can reach 40.

So, even though I am 15, I have achieved successful weight loss. I do excercise 1 hour a day, 6 days a week.

I find the sticks are excellent in helping me determine if a food is too high in carbs as I have wound up at zero twice during my three month diet.

Thanks for the info! Congrats on your loss!

I'm about a week in, now, and floating between 5 and 15 on the strips.

I wonder, does anybody ever get into the dark red numbers when low carbing (assuming nothing is physically wrong)? Just wondering what the highest normal readings are.

Thanks again!

Ketosis is ketosis. Don't worry about how red it turns as long as it turns. How red it turns is affected by everything from how much fat you are eating to how much water you are drinking. The real measure of how things are going is your body and how you're clothes fit. Get a tape measure and take your measurements and write them down every week or so.

I have lost 63 pounds so far and have only seen a dark color on the strips once or twice! A lot of them time, I am only in the lightest category, or do not show up as being in ketosis according to the strips (they register negative). The strips are just a guideline! Don't worry about them too much. Remember, your body uses the ketones you make for energy! If you use most of them, only what is left over (which can be a small amount or none!) would be expelled in the urine!

Thanks for the great info! Sounds like you two are doing great, and that's a wonderful tip about the tape measure!

Please don't judge your success by the keto sticks! I know, they are ADDICTIVE!! If you're going to use the strips daily, the best time to test would be in the morning. If you're testing after you've gone to the bathroom a few times, you may have already released most of the ketones in your urine. Especially if you've been drinking lots and lots of water!

The most optimal time to test for ketosis is at midnight. If you want to learn more about ketosis I suggest reading "The Ketogenic Diet"-he gives an in depth study of it and the science behind it.

At midnight? Right before my coach turns into a pumpkin and my horses transform into rats?

Seriously, midnight? Amazing! Wondering why, of course!

"Ketone concentrations tend to vary throughout the day and are generally lower in the morning, reaching a peak around midnight (6). This may occur from changes in hormone levels throughout the day.

I too am a ketostix addict. I use them more actually than the scale. I have had them in the purple frequently when I was working out a lot. Now, that I m so lazy usually it is light or moderate. But anyway, my experience is the more exercise the darker the strip!

Don't make yourself crazy with the sticks. Any color at all is great. If you are well hydrated they may not get dark at all.

I like using the sticks but only get a dark colour once a day in the evening.

I use the sticks daily and I usually read high, but if I drink less than 12 cups of water it's almost black. The water helps to flush and I have been told
by a doctor that even if the stick don't show colour you still could be burning.
They are very addictive and I try to see what kicks me out usually low carb bread...

I have been in ketosis for weeks...and after the initial 2o pounds I lost...NOTHING. I am not sure it matters that much if you are in ketosis. grrr

I was in deep purple ketosis only during the skiing season (skiing in the morning, intense yoga in the evening). Nowadays, I am in light pink or "moderate"...or I am negative...but that usually changes into light pink before I go to bed (at midnight ).

I cut my ketostixs into two so I can get 100 of them for the price of 50. I buy mine at Walmart (6 bucks).

I used the Keto strips in my earlier days of Atkins but now I'm understanding that they are not a reliable means to see if you are in the fat burning state. Rather, it only takes 3-4 days of low carb eating to get there.

Ten years ago, my strips were at the most showing "slight" ketones yet I lost lots of weight and inches rapidly - how could I have not been in keto-land?

Back then, they said that drinking water will dilute the results. Evening testing was better after you've eaten low carbs during the day.

Weigh in the morning, Keto strips in the evening was the general rule back then.

I don't even use them anymore.
