in almost all cases a low carb diet improves cholesterol numbers, when they are looked at in the modern way, looking more at proportions than total numbers by themselves.

your triglycerides should come WAY down and the good cholesterol HDL should go up a good deal. these are very good. sometimes the LDL stays pretty high too, but like I said, the proportions make that ok.

Do some homework on cholesterol - don't be afraid of 'high' numbers. Have you read Good Calories Bad Calories by Gary Taubes? Or his new book How We Got Fat and What to do About It? Both explain the total BS surrounding the theory that high cholesterol causes heart disease.

BUT you really should look into this. If your doctor is concerned and wants to put you on a low-fat diet, or put you on statins, you MUST educate yourself so you can do what's right for YOU.

I am trying to find what my numbers are...I have them somewhere around here. It has been "high" the last two or three years, but I always am told to try to control by diet and if that doesn't work we will put you on meds. I have just heard so many bad things about cholesterol meds, I don't really want to.

Cholesterol is always preached and related to red meat and stuff, it made me go hmmm with all of the meat you eat on Atkins.

It's been shown repeatedly that bad triglyceride counts are a direct result of the insulin resistance cycle, NOT from eating cholesterol -- which is the most ridiculous thing the medical establishment ever put forth, akin to being able to grow a watermelon in your stomach after eating watermelon seeds.

My so-called bad cholesterol went down 100 points, from 250 to 145 after eating three eggs every morning, bacon, butter and red meat like it was going out of style since August and this is with PostRAI thyoriditis, which is notorious for raising cholesterol levels on its own. The minute I go back to sugar, wheat and no meat, I'm sure it'll go right back up, so ...

Another good source of info is the movie Fat Head. It's on Hulu.com and you can watch it for free.
A great source of information by many of the experts.

I had a stent put in last Feb. my triglycerides are through the roof and my cholesterol is OK, but my good cholesterol is too low. I can't afford the meds anymore now that I don't have health insurance. I've decided to dump the cholesterol & triglyceride meds and just keep the stent & heart meds for now with moderate exercise. For me it's life and death that I stick to the program.

Hey CindyF - can you tell us what you are eating now? Your profile says Atkins but are you eating mostly meat/fat/fish/eggs and other fatty good things? Or have you started sneaking back some of the bad stuff? Not to criticize you sight un-seen but if we can help you in any way post your menus. I for one love to see what other people are eating!!

I just started last Monday....I don't eat eggs, so for breakfast everyday I have bacon and sliced tomatos or an atkins bar if no time. lunch varies. One day I had lc smother chicken and salad from cracker barrell, another day a lettuce wrap, another day a steak salad...trying to remember! Dinner, a couple of times the lc hamburger from Hardees, hamb steak and sald, last night I had chilis...salad and lime chicken and lime shrimp....tonight for lunch/dinner I had Mexican....fajitas with no wrap. Snacks are usually cheese, broccoli and ranch dip, celery and cheese. And if I am dying for something sweet I will have sf jello or sf jello temptation.

From my blog....

In February last year, my a1c was 7.9 This year it was 5.5. What a great change!!! That is only due to eating low carb. I take no diabetes medicine.

Another advantage to a low carb diet is an improvement in cholesterol. In February last year my triglycerides were 86. Now they are 49. Again, no meds for this....just good ol' low carb eating

I have cholesterol that is so high you'd fall out of your chair - close to 400 (hereditary) and my GP was absolutely SHOCKED to see my numbers dramatically improve while on Atkins. Granted, I also take natural supplements i.e. guggul and beta sisterols but my numbers improved by almost 100 - last month it was down to 285 and improvements all around (HDL vs LDL, triglycerides, etc).

I am living proof that not only does the intake of fat from Atkins not RAISE your cholesterol, but it actually LOWERS it.

Also, great recommendation to read Mr. Taubes. Doing so changed my life!
