I'm thinking....no.

One medium 4" grapefruit is 20.7 carbs, with 2.8 dietary fiber, which makes it 17.9 net carbs.

You can check values of most foods for yourself at ******.com.

HTH!

a good program for looking carbs up is MyFatSecret, which also lets you log your foods for the day and see your carb totals.

It all depends what stage you're on. Since this is the Atkins forum, I'll put it in those terms:

Grapefruit would certainly be a no-no on Induction
If it came in OWL it would be in the 7th rung of "fruits other than berries and melons."

If you are just introducing it to your diet you should only have a 5 g carb increment of it, which would be... approximately 4 "sections" of a grapefruit, according to ******.

I think it would be a rare case for a low-carber to eat a whole grapefruit, but you have to find out what your body can handle. Count those carbs carefully, and try to balance it with fat or protein.

For me, one of the advantages of doing low carb is that I'll never have to eat a grapefruit again.

You can add it back at any stage of the Atkin's after Induction if you do limited amounts of it, but he recommends you first add nuts and more veggies, then dairy and then low carb fruits. You could eat about a fourth of one for between 5 and 10 carbs if I recall correctly (depends on size of fruit and if red or white; 1/2 fruit is listed as 18 carb grams I think) Use on line carb checker or carb counter book for accuracy, although it will be an approximation because it depends on the size of the fruit.

As with any new addition, you should eat it 3 or 4 times in a week and be sure it doesn't affect your ketosis or weight loss. ( I would divide that puppy into fourths and try it for a few days but make sure I wasn't feeling any cravings or gaining lbs.)

If you are doing a low carb diet and not a specific plan (like Atkins) then you just count the carbs toward your daily total.

If I recall correctly, it was one of the recommended fruits after berries and melons, in terms of being nutrient dense for the carb content...

Interesting that some of you hate grapefruit. I LOVE it...when it's a sweet red ruby Texas type grapefruit (sometimes hard to find). I bought one at the store yesterday for DH, and I was reduced to just smelling it from the outside for awhile. I confess to wanting to eat it more than I want to eat a cake or donut or something....I know, pathetic...dreaming about a grapefruit. That's what 9 weeks of induction will do to you! Anyhow, I have previously had just a half a grapefruit, and I really do think it stalled me, so no more grapefruit while I'm in losing mode.
