What's an average weight loss rate?

I started the Atkins in June and have only lost 12 lbs. I see so many people dropping 3 or 4 times that in the same amount of time. I'm wondering what is the standard rate, to see if I am possibly doing something wrong...

there is no standard rate.
Folk put different amounts of efforts into working thewir Atkins and have different metabolisms and body comp so they will lose different amounts.

the important thing for you is to know you are healtheir and 12 pounds lighter then you were 4 months ago.

What are you doing for your mandatory exercise part of your atkins?

which plan are you following and what phase are you in?

I have personally lost 10 lbs in about 5 weeks. It's been standstill since week 3 though. I do a fair amount of lifting so I think some of that is offsetting the fat loss. 2 lbs per week is usually pretty normal for myself and I am fairly dedicated.

My buddy lost 25-30 lbs a month, 140 over 4 months. he ate nothing but steak and eggs. He also had to take a stick to bite on into the restroom. I'll stick to my 2 lbs a week. Course he also weighed close to 400 lbs.

My doctor has said--and I think it's pretty commonly agreed upon--that a healthy rate of weight loss is a pound or two a week but not more than that. Obviously there are different factors such as amount of exercise and intensity of physical training, but if people shoot for more than 2 pounds a week, they might be using unhealthy measures to get there.

My rate of loss was about 1.5 a week on the average, and it slowed down to about .5 a week for the past month and a half or so.

We would need to know more about you to guess at whether or not you could be losing faster than you have been. Your age, any underlying medical conditions, medications, and your actual diet and activity levels would all give us better information with which to help you.

I typically lose 3-4 lbs a month when I'm being very strict. It's not fast but that's fine with me.

Sue, it's not fast, but really it's not slow either. That's a very good, sustainable rate of loss. Congrats on your 34 pounds!

I think a lot of people have been tricked by shows like The Biggest Loser to expect faster results than are safely possible for "regular people" (outside of the realm of severe dietary restriction and strict, vigorous exercise regimens).

Slower is better, don't rush it. The slower it comes off the longer it will stay off is what I've heard.

Lancer - I agree! It was torture in the restroom my last go round. That is why I eat my apples, peaches, broccoli and make sure I get in plenty of good lc veggies and beans. I never want to go thru that again.
