Hello everyone. I wanted to start this thread because I often find myself completely out of ketosis without having any idea WHY.

Things that claim to have 0 per serving probably have up to .6 . And unless you are measuring, you might well be having way more than one serving.

Mayo! Be sure to check the ingredients and confirm there is no sugar in your mayo. My mustard here also has sugar in it.

You just go to your local drug store (Walgreens, CVS, ect) and ask the pharmacist for Ketostix. They run about $12 bucks for a bottle. You hold the ketostix in your urine stream. There is a color chart on the bottle for you to compare your strip with.

Thanks for some of your answers. I try to stay away from soy sauce unless I'm having sashimi. I also know that miracle whip and other mayos like that have a bunch of sugar, but I sure didn't know about MUSTARD having sugar!! Thats what I mean about SNEAKY!!! I hope people will drop by and give me all the hints they can. I'm soaking all this info up like a sponge. MUSTARD---imagine that!!!

Sorry, I guess I asked my question the wrong way. I was wondering how *you* are testing for ketosis. Anyway, I understand you use ketostix.

You can be in ketosis without changing the color of the ketostix. Our bodies make three types of ketones: acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetone. Ketostix only measure the concentration of excess acetoacetate spilled over into your urine. So they measure only one kind of ketone and they only measure the stuff your body does not use. In the body, acetoacetate can be used for fuel or it can be converted to beta-hydroxybutyrate and, a smaller part, to acetone. Furthermore, drinking a few extra glasses of water will dilute your pee, so it will lower the concentration of acetoacetate for the same number of molecules. Eating medium and short-chain triglycerides (e.g. coconut oil) will increase the number of ketones, thus the number of excess acetoacetate will also increase, which means you will have darker ketostix for the same amount of other stuff in your pee.

So testing for ketosis with ketostix is not very accurate and can give different results depending on the moment of day when you test (never test in the morning right after you wake up), on the amount of water you drank, on what you had at your last meal, on the exercise you did and so on. It is often better to look for physical signs of ketosis, which are more reliable. Some of these are decreased appetite, fruity/bad breath, metallic taste in your mouth, increased energy, funny smelling pee...

I actually often test first thing in the morning. Sometimes I test in the afternoon as well. I usually drink 120+ ounces of water everyday. I don't drink anything other than water unless I want an alcoholic drink and then I stick to vodka and diet tonic.

Yep, so testing first thing in the morning does not give accurate results. A few years ago an Atkineer from another board called the manufacturer of the ketostix and was told to take the test two hours or so after eating, not right after she wakes up. She was also told to never test after exercising and never wait more than 15 seconds to read the strip. Also, for women, never test when you have your period.

The products of alcohol breakdown will give you a false positive on the stix, so peeing on ketostix after drinking is pointless.

Periodically recheck labels of stuff you buy all the time, because manufacturers change formulations sometimes. I've been caught out like that before and had to stop buying something as it was no longet low enough. If it's got "New and Improved" or "Great new taste" or whatever on it, recheck the label.

spices the serving size if you look on the bottle is 1/8th to a 1/4th of a teaspoon so they can say 0 carbs But when you add 2Tablesppons to your recipe there are going to be carbs. I know many newbiews freakout when they discover cinnamon has carbs and they have been eating Splenda and cinnamon covered cream cheese and porkrinds in large amounts.

Eggs! I know this sounds crazy, but I never knew eggs had 1 carb per egg! LOL Pretty darn sneaky when you don't know about it! LOL

Could you post a menu for us to take a look at to see where those sneaky carbs might be hiding?

OH and remember too, Dr. A says that they are only a tool...sometimes we are in ketosis without it being enough to spill over into our urine. Are you still losing?
