Staying at 20g but not in Induction? Check in here!

Okay...I guess I'm not technically in OWL per the other thread, since I'm staying at the lower max carbs rather than climbing the rungs and/or adding 5g/day/week.

So if anyone else is like me, check in here!

Here's what I'm doing:

1. I have finished with Induction.
2. I am staying at ~20g carbs/day.
3. My carbs are NOT net. I just count 'em up and if a bunch of them on a given day are fiber, so much the better! It will all even out in the end, I'm assuming.
4. I am trying to get in at least a daily walk.
5. Out of my total, I can eat non-Induction carbs...since I'm no longer in Induction. So I may eat a few nuts or one thing or another that would either be very limited or nonexistent on Induction.

Hope this makes sense: In a nutshell: If you plan on staying at 20g carbs/day for a while, net or not, doesn't matter, but are no longer on Induction, check in here!

Don't worry, Mel, plenty of people do the Induction level carbs, but introducing new foods. It's common enough around here. As long as you're not getting your 20g of carbs from cakes or chips, it's something that can work well! Some of the higher rungs could be barred to you, since trying to get in an say an apple and your veggie carbs for the day might be too much of a squeeze at 20g. But you can assess that later and see if you're ready to try moving up a few grams per day.

Remember that it's not as simple as lowest carbs = only way to keep losing. If that was the case then the whole diet would be Induction! So keep an open mind as you go through the next few weeks.

Hi, Dylan! Your avatar is making me laugh.

junkfoodmonkey, thank you, and you are so right. Of course, if I ever can do fruit without winding up outside of Ralph's at 2AM raking my fingernails down the glass and begging to be let in to satisfy the resultant binge, maybe I can do apples, just in thin slices (since as you say, a whole apple is really pretty high in carbs) and with peanut butter. I've heard pairing fruit with a protein can offset things sometimes...but no, I'm definitely not up for that yet. I'd rather not play around with things and would rather just not include certain rungs for the time being if I know they're likely to be triggers.

ETA: I have heard from some people that eventually, as the body heals itself a bit from years of crappy eating, it *is* possible to reintroduce a few foods one would not have thought one could. But again...no rush on that! I'm pretty happy with my food right now.

I always eat fruit with protein and/or fat and usually as part of a meal, never on its own as a snack, as that's just asking for a blood sugar surge and crash for me, even with fruits I can handle well. So if and when you're ready to try some fruit definitely make sure to combine it with protein or fat or both.

Well this thread title definitely caught my eye! I've been doing 'extended induction' for about 4 months now. I don't net my carbs and stay at 20g -- this week is the first time I've toyed with almonds a little bit. Prior to that, it was pretty much strict induction. I really don't have anything against OWL, but things are going so great, I'm afraid to change anything...even only adding an additional 5g of induction veggies! I know I need to get over that, and I will eventually -- at either my 6 month mark or another 20 lbs. gone whichever comes first. I was even afraid to have a few almonds...but I found little snack packs (1.5 oz.) at the checkout of one of our grocery stores and figured that was binge proof instead of buying the big canister I had in my hands.

Hmmmmmmmmmm...so you're still losing despite staying at 20g? I was playing around a little at 25-ish (once was 30) non-net to see if that would shake things up...thinking I might have the wrong take on all this. But if it does work for some people..I don't know, I just feel so much more comfortable at lower carbs. Like you, I'm kind of afraid picking them up...

I did extended indution till my want for bread caused me to answer yes to the chapter 13 questions and I moved to OWL.

DId you know Dr Atkins recommneded adding nuts to the induction menu after day 14 it is in DANDR 2002 in the section on nuts in the carbohydrate chapter page 86 so enjoy your almonds. they hare packed with many healthy vits and minerals and all those new things scientists are just discovering are healthy for us.

I'd love to hang out here a little while, so I can catch my LC footing. Got really off the beaten path...heck, I can't even see the path.......

I have a friend giving me some pretty sound advice I do believe.... (TY-friend), so I'm here....just trying to find someplace to hang out and get things moving in the right direction.

I have managed to be cigarette free since June 1, 2009....and really don't even crave those things at this point......so....I'm ready to commit to my WOE.

I'm leaving for vacation on Friday this week....but I'm not going to let that detour me. No reason too.....I have been onplan for vacation before...I can do it again.

Here is my commitment through the end of June....at which time...I will re-commit......

1) 20 grams carbs or less daily
2) adequate daily water
3) take my vitamin supplements daily
4) 30-60 minutes of activity daily

That simple.....there is nothing written there....that I can't do on a daily basis.

I think I will still have internet access at the beach, so I will be checking in....

Good Luck to YOU and ME!

Dee

good to see you guys joining. hang in there and remember if you get off plan for any reason the moment you regain conciousness make the next bite back on plan. no punishment food deprivation and no well I'll restart tomorrow or when ever all these yummy high carb foods are gone. Do it immediately and you will notice that your off plan eatting is getting smaller and smaller and less and less frequent until you got to check your food journal to remeber the last time you were off plan.

OK....I'm on Day 2...and working through it. For the most part....very very good....but I'm having a lot of stress from getting things packed for vacation, finishing up things at work and so forth.

But....I'm sticking with the plan.

I leave tomorrow morning at 6:00 am, but I think I am going to be able to get online with my laptop from the condo. If I can....YIPPY!!!! I'll be posting. If not.... . I will be on the road all day tomorrow.....so it will at least Saturday before I can check back in.

How about everyone else? How is everyone here doing? Sticking to plan.....

Good Luck!

Yep....I have some string cheese pk'd and cans of chicken & tuna. I have some SF jello in the cooler, some turkey pepperoni. Me and mom both love salami rolls, so there is a block of cream cheese in the cooler with a bit of salami.

I have a little jar of olives for something salty.

Mom got some leaf lettuce out of her garden and packed it, so that I can roll up some meat in it, when we stop for lunch.

I think I'm pretty good to go....

Lots and lots of water packed, because I'm gonna try to back off the diet soda....but an emergency stash of crystal light...just in case the craving hits.

My mom and daughter are very supportive, the granddaughter is 4....so I imagine I will hear and smell cookies in the back seat. Nothing would make a cookie taste worse than eating an olive before it....(so the olive's will be my co-pilot...LOL).

Any other ideas??? I'm determined to stay on plan....on the beach at the gulf....tons of seafood and good fresh produce...so no excuses...

OH...and I boiled some eggs too!

Dee

Good job, Dee. Planning = success.

That's so funny--but true!--about the idea of eating a cookie after an olive. I like your strategic thinking!

watch the shell fish as most have carbs in them too. it is the carbs in the muscle tissue that give them the "sweet" taste.

I wonder if this is what I am doing? I stay around 20 grams a day as well. I don't eat too many nuts or berries but would like to. I am thinking maybe I'm having a hard time losing weight because I don't have "that much" to lose; only about 15-20 pounds. Maybe I should be more on this page?

So if you are counting total and not net carbs then you are probably getting way under each day if you don't take out the fiber right?

Count me in too. I started the day after Mem Day, so I'm on day 31, down 16 pounds. I know that's not as extreme as a lot of people lose in a month but I'm happy with it - heck, that's still faster than average at 4 pounds/week!

Atkins says it's fine to stay on the 20 net carbs a week "if you have a lot of weight to lose". What does that mean?? I have 40-ish more to go. Like several of you, I'm scared that upping my carbs will slow my loss. And I'm not feeling deprived or missing any certain foods yet. So I figure that I'm good to go for a while longer.

I have added nuts to my acceptable foods list and that's been really nice to actually have some crunch!!

I just pulled in, but was anxious to check in.....

And.....the best part.....no ciggy for the entire vacation too.....Ciggy free since 6/1/2009.

Be back after bit.
