Heavy Cream...can too much be bad?

Hi, I am new to Atkins...got the Atkins for Life book and have ordered the Atkins New Diet Revolution. Until my other book comes in...I have to ask about the heavy cream. It is really good mixed with diet sugar free cocoa...a little too good LOL. I noticed even though it has no carbs it is awfully high in calories. I had about a half cup today and yesterday and it really satisfied my sweet cravings. Can all of the calories hurt my weight loss though? Just checking before I end up drinking the whole carton this week LOL.

Thanks!
Erin

Ok, after a little researching I realized I am only supposed to have daily 3 ounces a day of heavy cream....sigh...I knew it was too good to to last. If this is not correct, please let me know. I read when I googled it that heavy cream has very slight hidden carbs..geez. My carton says zero..can't wait to get my book so I will know these things.

It may well be slightly less than 1 gram per serving, but a serving is a tablespoon, and three tablespoons = 1 fluid ounce. So just be aware that there are indeed carbs in it!

If you're using cream to mix with diet sodas, try some DaVinci's sugar free syrups too. I LOVE the cherry and vanilla with a diet coke. Delicious with or without the cream, and gives the diet sodas a nice flavor. Helps with sugar cravings as well!

Anything that has less than 1 carb per serving is allowed to say 0, so don't get too excited to see anything labeled 0!

Geez, now I am glad I asked...so do you automatically allot one carb if the package has 0 carbs? Or are there certain foods? Maybe this will be covered in the book...sorry to ask again LOL. Thanks!!

There are "hidden carb" calculators where you can figure it out exactly.

Regardless if HC has carbs or not - it has been stalling me big time. Im trying to keep it out of my eating for now. I am going to miss my chocolate carmel enchantment chai tea every morning with this. *sigh* For me, ill have to add this back when I am at maintance level.

I have HWC every day - 3-4 Tablespoons in my morning eggcream and sometimes a couple of Tablespoons in my evening diet soda. It does not stall me at all - thank heavens!

Anything high in fat is calorie dense and can stall you out. That is the reason Dr. Atkins gave us guidelines as to portion sizes and daily limits. If you're not losing weight, look to too much fat (butter and cream are the most common) culprit.

ETA: Although sugar free cocoa mixes are sugar free, they are FAR from carb free. Be careful with those as well.

After induction, you can have more if you count it in your carbs for the day. For me, hwc is a staple and helps me feel satisfied. I don't count calories and stick to the carb amount. Also, whenever I stall, it turns out that there isn't enough fat in my food plan for the day. I would suggest that you be careful with artificial sweeteners like aspartame because not only are they bad for your health, they tend to stall weight loss.

in that DANDR you just got Dr Atkins puts cream in something called a special catagory induction foods.
they come with a warning that they may slow or stop your weight loss and if they do then you should not use them as part of your induction.

Some folk use cream instead of other fats in their Atkins so they have no problems. If your inches and sclaes are moving as you reasonably want them continue to enjoy the cream but if they aren't them you know where to cut back first.

Hi Peanutte! I posted in the induction starting 1/19 thread and didn't see you over there. Can you believe I'm still loving on the mashed cauliflower?

I've lost 28 lbs. in 8 weeks!!

I wanted to mention that it's only TWO Tablespoons in a fluid ounce (I had to look it up when I started 8 weeks ago because I love my iced coffees with DaVinci SF chocolate syrup, and I have my full 3 oz. of heavy cream almost every day...I wish it were 3 Tbsp. to 1 fl oz. coz that would mean an extra couple of coffees I could have haha!

I'm trying to catch up on how everyone is doing, but this is the first thread I opened and saw a name I recognized. I hope all is well with you, and now I'm off to read to find out for myself!

I plug everything I put in my mouth into ******.com first. 2 fluid oz. (4 Tbsp.) of heavy cream is 1.7 carbs.

Erin,

I believe that you are allowed only 2-3 tablespoons of heavy cream during induction. I find that if you dilute it with water, you can have more for the same amount. But not half a cup.

Under "Special Foods" in the book, Dr. A said we could have up to 3 oz. daily, but I agree with those who say it's loaded with calories and stalls some people. I don't eat cheese, so I allow myself the 3 fluid ounces almost every day.

Update: I think I may have stalled my weight...with the heavy cream at night since I have been using it almost every day about a half cup. I need to look in the recipes/menus and get some other ideas for night time snacking. May try that egg cream I keep seeing. Maybe I will just use the heavy cream for coffee and a splurge once a week.

are you hungry and need food or are you just eating out of habit? if you are eating out of habit nix the snack no matter what it might be. If you are snacking cause you are hungry then have some protein and fat with a little bit of your carbs.

Oh no, waterlily--that was totally a typo/brain hiccup on my part! I know that three teaspoons = one tablespoon and two tablespoons = 1 fluid ounce, but I get them mixed up in my head sometimes!

I'm not much on heavy cream anyway, and after reading how calorie-dense it was, I was even less inclined to start the habit. I keep a couple of vanilla Atkins shakes in the fridge and use them in place of cream in coffee, recipes, etc... lots of protein, plenty of fat, and 1g carb in the whole shake.

There are practically hundreds of threads out there about the Atkins products and that they will "stall you" during induction (technically, though, a stall isn't a stall unless it's for about a month, according to Dr. A.) Heck, I'm sure people stall from a lot of things... and some think back to the shakes and blame it on that. I would agree, however, in the case of the Atkins BARS, which contain all kinds of sugar alcohols and such - not a good idea for most people. The SHAKES, though, are essentially just protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and Splenda. Having one here and there for convenience or in a recipe in place of cream is a good LC way to liven things up. I had a couple a DAY on induction (breakfast and post-workout), and lost a lot. I've switched over to the Myoplex carb control shakes now, but still doing fine.

Hope this helps.

I enjoy a sugar-free jello with just a splash of heavy cream after dinner or for snack.

What a great idea on the vanilla shakes...that would still give me the vanilla taste I want for a snack. Also, the sf jello is great, I do love those.

During induction I used heavy cream in my coffee and on jello. Now, I use more of it for frosting on cupcakes and mix it with mascoprone cheese on top of mini-cheese cakes. It has caused me no problems and has helped me feel full and satisfied. I like the idea of using frozed shakes and will give it a try.

if you want a treat use the shake as the liquid in making your jello and you got shake cubes as a snack. just use plain unflavored gelatin as the jello in the recipe for plain vanilla flavored stuff or cherry for cherry vanilla.
