Anyone NOT like green bean fries?
 
I'm planning our menu for next week, and I was thinking of having bunless cheeseburgers with green bean fries. I ran the idea past my husband, and he didn't like it. Here's my problem with him. He is the fussiest eater EVER. His sister, too. I tell them both that I don't understand why they don't like vegetables; DH's mom was an avid gardener and they always had fresh vegetables.

I'm a little unsure, but I've seen a lot of rave reviews on LCF, so I'm willing to give it a try. It's a $0.50 can of green beans from Wal-Mart; not a huge risk, lol. I'm thinking that if he actually tries them, he might be very surprised. (We've got lc ketchup, so that might help.)

Do you think that I can get my ultra-fussy husband to come to the green side, lol?

Well, I tried them on MY husband, and ended up eating the whole batch myself.

I dunno, I guess it's because I'm older (no kids in the house to take care of), but my DH knows where the kitchen is, and if he doesn't like what I cook, when I cook it, then he's certainly welcome to help himself.

There are times when I actually hope he won't like what I fix! :p (More for me. Since I can't eat very much at a time, sometimes if it's something he likes, it's all gone before I can go back and get more.)

Seriously, though, to the OP, there's no way of knowing whether he'll like it in advance. You can only do what you can do, and go from there. The world won't end (I suppose) if you cook one meal that isn't his favorite.

I love the green bean fries, but i dont think they taste like real fries. My non veggie eater husband outright refused to try them. The kids loved them, but they love green beans in any form. I think the taste is similar to sweet potato fries.

I'm making them tonight, and my only request of my husband is that he take one bite. I'm armed with low carb ketchup (my local grocery story sells a lot of low carb stuff; someone must've requested it in the past or something), so I'll dip it in that before he bites.

Crossing my fingers! This could be a great lazy-day meal. Bunless burgers and gb fries. I'm already psyched.

toss fresh or frozen green beans in a plastic bag, add oil and seasoning of choice. Shake. Pour contents onto pan. Bake in oven on 400 for 30 min.

I don't like them. They taste bitter to me. Dipping them in enough lc ketchup helped though. I was so disappointed because I really love green beans.

Oh well.

I prefer fries made from jicama, sweet potatos, turnips, or rutabegas.

I don't know where to find jicama. It doesn't seem to be in any stores around here. I did, however, try the gb fries. They don't taste quite like fries, but they are still pretty good. I know my girls are going to love them.

I made more today. Almost 2 hours at 275*. Next time I'll up the temp a bit I think. They definitely continue cooking and darkening for a few minutes after you take them out. Weird! The ones today still were a wee bit overdone (the bitterness comes out) but my 3rd batch should be perfect :)

I tried a sample run the other night with just a few in the toaster oven (I have committment issues:laugh:).

I planned on leaving them in at least an hour at 275 -- they were done in about 20 minutes (all brown and shriveled) and great googley moogley were they wonderful! No Heinz needed here -- and I thought they tasted just like sweet potato fries. Yum!

I think when we have them, it'll be another night like tonight. Grilled steaks and steamed zucchini. He only ate the steak. :rolleyes: I've almost given up on trying to include foods that are pleasing to him. When we met, the only vegetables he'd eat were corn, carrots and French Cut green beans. For some reason, he won't eat real green beans. *shaking head*

I tried them!! The 400 degrees for thirty minute method. Except that I forgot about them and kept saying to my husband "What's that beeping noise?? Do you hear beeping??" "Nope," he says. Then 10 minutes later he's in the kitchen pulling them out of the oven (beeping was the timer!) and calls back to me "Uh oh -- you're not going to be happy, these things look awful!!" and I said "HURRAY -- THAT MEANS THEY CAME OUT PERFECTLY!"

I've done the 400 for 30 minutes and they have turned out great. I think a lot depends on the size of the bean.

:rofl: Very funny -- If you were referring to me forgetting about them, then I'd say closer to 40 for sure! But I INTENDED only 30. :)

400 degrees for 30 minutes seemed to be the time and temp that most folks suggested on the other green bean fries thread that KensBev posted the link for. That was for crispy fries. Others, who liked them mushier in the middle and not quite so crips on the outside, recommended 2 hours at 300 or 325(I think)

Green Bean Fries
 
Is there a way to cook them without them turning black?

I tried this weekend and they were burned on the bottom.

Ricardo, to avoid the burning on the bottom, I always line the pan with parchment paper. Ok, it's actually to avoid washing a burned pan, but it does prevent the burning on the bottom, too. :D
