How do you do it??

I've lost weight on the atkins plan and then I give in to cravings and gain weight. and it always comes back to where I don't want it (butt, hips and thighs). I've been on weight watchers for the past month and it looks like
I'm getting bigger even though the scale says "down 4 pounds".

I just checked GARY TAUBES book Good Calories Bad Calories and out of the library and it's really an eyeopener. So, why is it so hard for me to stick with
this? I love eggs and meat and chicken and salad and broccoli and the hardest thing for me when I switched back to low fat was not having real
butter on my steamed broccoli. Yes, I did get sweet cravings but it was for
things like pink grapefruit and cantalope not cookies or ice cream. When it's hot out I perfer popcicles to ice cream.

Anyhow, I need to know How do you do this? I can't seem to stay on the plan long enough to reach goal.

We all do it bite by bite, hour by hour, day by day. Some choices we make are better than others. Find a base of support - like Deb's "300+ Support" or Ilpirata's "Eat Up to Your BMR, No Matter What" - and get smarter about how the successful folks stay psyched up to plan successful LC days - and how we all pick ourself up and start over each time we slip up. It happens. What matters is how quickly one climbs back aboard! You can DO this! I can DO this! It's not brain surgery. It's just eating healthier food, bite by bite.

Have you moved past Induction to OWL? The foods you mentioned above may be worked into your plan if you progress up the carb ladder (I understand there are SF Popsicles commercially or you could make some) so if you haven't climbed the ladder before, plan on doing it this time. Why stay in first gear when you're driving a roadster like Atkins?

Do induction and move to OWl so you can have pink grapfruits on rung 7 canteloup on rung 4

and you can freeze soda in paper cups with sticks for sugar free legal popcycles.

You brought up an important point. For me being on a lowcarb diet meant losing sizes faster than the weight itself. Kick Weight Watchers to the curb and do it quick! Go back to lowcarb and eat a piece of fruit a few times a week or by sugar free popsicles. There are ways to get all of your favorite foods in your diet while remaining low carb.

Fruit treats...occasionally...even on a LC plan...

Grapefruit. It's a real treat. Any kind. Pink, white or red. Love grapefruit!

Don't have it often, but sure like it a lot. I try to eat as much of the white pith as possible, as I understand there is nutritional value to it, bitter as it is. Can't say that I munch grapefruit peel as I do orange peel in sliced oranges. Do you like the tiny sour citrus kumquat? OMG, pure heaven, peel and all. Yum!

Eating the skin of any fruit increases fiber and adds nutritional kick. Mango skin? Yum! It's leathery, but it chews up just fine.

Never noticed any blistering, so I guess I'm not sensitive to this substance.

Other sources of urushiol are Ginkgo, Japanese Lacquer, Rengas tress, Pink peppercorns and Cashew shell oils.
Cashew shell? Cashews don't HAVE shells, do they? Just see this!

No, I never moved on to OWL phase. I just stayed on induction because I
read you would lose faster that way. I'm going shopping tonight to get all
right foods back in the house.

Yes I agree about losing it fast that' why I just stayed on induction because I wanted to lose fast but the cravings set in and I caved. I never moved to
phase ll OWL.
I'll do it by the book this time I'd tired of this weight dominating my life.
I want it gone once and for all!

Good luck with it. You can maybe lose faster on Induction (though it doesn't always work that way) but if in the end that makes you go off the plan altogether then it offers no advantage does it?

Which is better? Slow and steady loss for a year, or fast loss for three months, then cracking, going off plan and back to old habits and putting it all back on? Which of these strategies is going to lead to your being thinner at the end of the year? No question really is there?

For me, it is about valuing my health more than my "treats" and realizing that the bad foods (I am a sugar/processed food addict) will kill me.

Simple as that. I work in vending, arround all my favorite bad things, so I need to have a very strong attitude. I take a total absinence approach to sugar, flours, and corn. I will NEVER consume them. I've suffered too much.

In your case, I agree with the other posters about moving up the carb ladder.

Moving through the phases of the plan is critical to success no Atkins. When you don't start adding good carbs back in, you end up feeling deprived and binging on them. The purpose of the phases is to teach you how to eat for life and how to keep the weight off. If you lose but you can't keep it off, what's the point? Good luck!
