When you say you eat up to your BMR
Is that your total BMR or is it your BMR minus a couple hundred calories?

I think what most people are referring to is eating to what you burn each day -- does that make sense? I would be interested to see if others respond teh same as mine ... For me, I eat aprox. 1600 callories per day -- because the online calculator said that 1500 callories was the min. I needed before moving into starvation mode and not losing ... Does that make sense?
It is true that one can eat too many callories -- HOWEVER if one does not eat enough callories they also won't lose. |

your BMR is only the minimum number of calories needed to keep you alive unconcious laying flat all day.
your AMR is your active metabolic rate and that is where folk want to be eating less then so they lose weight ideally you would eat between those numbers and shrink your body in a healthy manner. |

I try to eat just above my BMR (in my case 1608) so my body gets what it needs to survive in a healthy fashion and doesn't think I am starving. I aim for about 1700 a day... still a good bit below what I burn through exercise and daily loving.

Its (BMR x {ActivityNumber}) - 20% (or x .8)
The Activity number is 1.2, 1.375, 1.55 etc depending on how active your are in the day. As a computer programmer I use 1.2 since I don't do much. A bike messenger would have to do higher. BMR would be the minimum calories you eat. |

I've been paying more attention to calories lately for this reason. My calories can be very low if I'm not paying attention. I don't really want to eat below my BMR by more than 100 calories or so. I want to protect my metabolism and my muscle mass, and I can say that it works for me.

BMR Calculator
then do the Harris-Benedict equation (which is the activity #; and i agree with above posters, don't overestimate) then subtract 300-500 cals or so to find a ballpark figure for weightloss |

I eat up to my actual BMR or higher. I don't force foods, it just ends up that way after I plug everything into fitday.

I eat up to my BMR but subtract to be in a calorie deficit since I am working on fat loss and not weight loss. However, I discovered-after doing calculations-that this equals out to be about body weight x 12. So that's the formula I follow now-body weight x 12. I get on the scale once a week (though I was curious after doing this seriously for the past 4 days & got on before the one week was up) to see where I am & adjust my BMR accordingly. (despite dropping 5 lbs in 4 days, I won't adjust my calories until I am at the one week mark-and I'm not trying to lose weight but I figured that might happen)
The greatest thing I have discovered about this? If I'm too low in calories one day, I can increase the next. If I'm too high, I can decrease the next-as long as it balances out to be the correct amount of calories for my BMR at the end of the week. This is how my calories have looked over the past 4 days: (1620 is my calorie deficit for this week) Thurs 1475 Fri 1786 Sat 1663 Sun 1570 This averages me out to about 1623 calories per day. I don't sweat over 3 extra calories...if it was 200 extra, I would...but not 3... Dyan
