A Fitday question

I want to lose about 50 lbs, and I have been using Fitday every day, and I'm burning more calories than I am taking in, and keeping it to 20g net carbs per day, and all that blah blah blah....

My question though, is how accurate is the Activities section of Fitday? For "Lifestyle" I chose "Standing Work (housework)" because that is the closest to what my job is (I am a cook at a restaurant, I work 7 or 8 hour shifts on my feet, constantly moving around, never sitting or even taking a break). It says I am burning 1600-1700 calories a DAY doing that?? Plus my Basal rate is 2400 calories. Surely I can't be burning 4000+ calories a day, plus my excercise?!

So I've changed it to "Seated work (some moving)" because I don't want to get too excited about how many calories I can take in.

I also wonder about those fitday numbers. Some seem too low some seem too high. But as a cook im sure you burn more calories than you think.

It may be true.

I try to focus on balanced eating (not all the carbs at one meal) rather than calories, although if I notice I'm getting up in calories I cut back.

I'm always surprised that a couple of hours at work (stocking) burns more calories than a run.

I've wondered the same thing. If the secret to weight loss is to burn more calories than you take in, then according to Fitday, I should be a stick. Yesterday, it says that I burned 2,346 "basal" and "lifestyle" calories. My caloric intake for the day was 1700.

I don't think I trust the FitDay activity numbers. I'm a real "slug" and it still says I'm burning more calories than I'm taking in and I don't think so!

OK, these posts have all but confirmed my suspicions. This is what I was afraid of. But why would it be so off-base? I'm tempted to not even enter my "Activities" (excercise). Maybe that would be more accurate... I don't know.

I found this very unhelpful answer in Fitday's FAQ.

How does FitDay estimate how many calories I burn per day?
To estimate the number of calories you burn per day, FitDay uses a calculation based on your weight, height, gender, age, and activity level.

It would be nice to know what the calculation is. I clicked on the "Home" link after logging into my account and changed my activity setting to "sedentary-bed bound" and it's still saying that I've burned 1716 calories before I even enter any activities for the day.

the use the Harris Benedict formula with activity multipliers

Women: BMR = 655 + ( 4.35 x weight in pounds ) + ( 4.7 x height in inches ) - ( 4.7 x age in years )
Men: BMR = 66 + ( 6.23 x weight in pounds ) + ( 12.7 x height in inches ) - ( 6.8 x age in year )

1.2 is the bed sedatary multiplier

The Basal rate seems about right. I did some comparisons with other websites and they are all approx the same for the Basal rate. But I just don't trust that Lifestyle equation at ALL. If it's true that I am burning 4007 calories a day (Basal + Lifestyle), then I should be able to EASILY lose a TON of weight very quickly.

I know what you mean cause according to my cal deficient6 from fitday i should have been a gaolie on the 3 month and darn near a skeleton by the time I did reach goal

same for the cals burns on the treadmills and other exercise equipement.

Most overweight folk do not have a normal metabolsim and do not burn cals at the same rate those who created the formulas folk did.

Well, I've lowered the Lifestyle to "Seated Work", which still lists 1093 cals burned per day. That's about 500 cals lower, so it should be closer to being accurate. I'm not obsessing about this, either. I just don't want to be misinformed, as this is something I take very seriously.

So now, according to Fitday, I burn 3500 cals/day without excercise. So far on Induction, I've never eaten 3500 cals in a day (although I came close when I overdid it on the Burger Scramble Florentine recipe - yummmm )

I think I'm going to leave mine at "sedentary-bed bound"- even though I am not even close to being bed bound and consider myself fairly active- because it appears to be more accurate for me. So I'm going to try eating less than 1700 calories for a few days and let you guys know what happens. I certainly wasn't losing any weight eating 2,000 calories even though Fitday said I should be, so we'll see.
