WOE: Atkins
Has anyone else noticed???

Hi guys,

I have been having trouble lately finding Atkins products in places where they used to be sold. Then today I checked a local supermarket just to see, because the bars, when I can find them, are selling for almost $3 apiece and the shakes at around $8 for a 4pack. Well today the supermarket I went to, (Ralphs in L.A.) was 'closing out/discontinuing' Atkins bars and shakes. Bars at $1.29 apiece and shakes at $3.49 for a 4pack. Of course I bought them up, but it makes me wonder...is Atkins as a company maybe going away? Does anyone know anything about this?

I think the low carb diet fad is ending. People don't want to commit, they want to use it like slimfast. The low carb lifestyle is alive and well - look at the board.

If it doesn't sell, it goes away. I had a vending machine stocked with low carb food items for a while, but sales were terrible. I ended up eating all the merchandise and converting it back to regular junk food.

My Walmart and Krogers still have low carb bars and shakes. That's about all they've got now. Forget about finding a bottle of lowcarb BBQ sauce like you could a few years ago.

I just got back from Walmart. They don't have south beach (LC) A-1 anymore, and there was no LC BBQ sauce, either. They did still have low-sugar ketchup, however. They also (still) have a good variety of Atkins bars and shakes...

I haven't seen them for months in the UK. The low carb was never huge here, and there weren't that many products specifically marketed at Atkineers. But even what used to be there has mostly vanished. Doesn't bother me any more. Overpriced junk is overpriced junk, low carb or not.

I don't really mind all the low carb stuff disappearing. Seems to me most of that stuff was nasty tasting frankinfoods anyway. When I started doing low-carb years ago there was nothing like that stuff available so you relied on knowledge and "real" food and stuff you could have. Was way more successful without that fluff available. (I do like the low sugar catsup tho hehehe)

Atkins Cornbread Mix is awesome, also. I used to be able to find it in the grocery store...but, no more. I'm going to have to go online and order a supply of it. It's sweet cornbread...the kind we like in the south.

Although I'm sorry for anyone who is losing a favorite, for me I'm glad to see these things disappearing.

I would really rather concentrate on eating clean, healthy, "food that remembers where it came from" and isn't loaded down with chemicals and additives, regardless of whether those chems & adds make me fat.

So as I am waiting for my chicken and green beans with some cream sauce and butter to finish warming up here for lunch, I'm glad to know there are fewer low carb frankenfoods waiting to tempt me from the supermarket shelves.

I was just in GNC and I was shocked that they didn't have a low carb section anymore.
The owner did say that he thinks atkins is slowly coming back. I guess he notices more people asking.

My local Publix still carries the Atkins shakes and bars, but, the shakes have been "improved"...... new packaging and bad taste!! Oh, well, I've found recipes to replace the shakes, but, I did like the convenience of a RTD.
