I have FAS and Bipolar disorder, and I do a lot better on a high-fat/low-carb diet.
I would make sure he gets lots of veggies (including the higher-glycemic ones we might avoid, like sweet potatoes, carrots, winter squash), whole fresh (ideally organic) fruit - a whole apple, cut up, as opposed to processed applesauce, whole grains as tolerated (whole grain oatmeal with fresh fruit in the morning), and find out for yourself does he do better on or off the dairy. Basically, Atkins Maintenance without the wheat and corn. I don't think white potatoes and white flour are any good anyway. Just try fresh whole foods, don't worry about the carbs 'cause he's a kid, and see how it goes. I'd avoid all the processed junk food entirely if you aren't already. I always had a lot more problems when I ate the fake foods. Hope this helps until a real expert comes along. ![]()

are you talking like a maintnenace atkins low carb with lots of healthy veggies, fruits, legumes,nuts/seeds, berries, and grains that do not contain gluten?
Have you checked out the www.gfcfdiet.com site to see what all your kid could have and still be gf/cf? |

Autism doesn't necessarily intimate gluten-intolerance. You might be looking at casein as being the culprit there.
I have autism in kids ranging from the ages of 15-7, and gluten intolerance hasn't been an issue. They eat more along the lines of glycemic load as opposed to Atkins. |

As far as a way of eating, I am a firm believer that low carb is good for everyone... (more of a maintenence LC for younger kids...).
If you're looking at ways to help your son's autism, remember that early intervention will have great benefits (occupational and speech therapies, behavior interventions, etc...). I wish you the very best! Last edited by Hot Tamale : 05-03-2008 at 11:24 AM. |

I just want to offer some encouragement to you. I know that autism is much more common and the ways of helping those with it have improved So much, but it still must be hard. Good luck and I hope you find a routine and way of eating that helps you and your son as much as possible!!

I am trying to lower my son'd carb intake too. I am going to stop buying cereal and stop the pasta as a fast and easy lunch.

WOW!
I was just talking about this with my DH last night. We are both lo carb and I am questioning why my kids (5 & 7 yo) are not also eating this way. They get a pretty darn healthy diet simply because of the meals I cook for DH and I plus I homeschool so no cafeteria food but still have different shelves in pantry for kids and lo carb grownups.DH wasn't so sure but I pointed out we committed to this not as a "diet" but as a healthier way of life and if it is healthier for us then it is healthier for them too. So we agreed we aren't counting carbs per say but work on limiting to very occaisional the convenience snacks, pastas and other addicting unhealthy foods. Again more like maintenance with fruit, veg and whole grain carbs. Considering having "cooking Mondays" where make up snacks and a few quick meals for the week in advance for munchkins and store in fridge for fast grabs. I think too that if our kids learn to eat the right foods now, they will be more lkely to make the right choices later in life and escape the "fat prison" thier parents are fighting out of.

I made a few changes this week. Instead of pasta I gave him shiratake noodles instead of regular pasta and he loved it. I also stopped buying cereal and have been giving him bacon egg types breakfasts. I also changed him to the low carb tortillas. He still eats a lot more fruit than we do, but he is a kids and can process these things better (I think).
