you are eating your cals as 75% protein which is not Atkins. Atkins is a ketogenic plan with high % of the cals coming from fats. you seem to be eating low cal for a fellow your size too.

I WEIGH 235 LBS AND AM 6'3". i USED TO PLAY COLLEGE FOOTBALL AND AM A BIGGER GUY. I WORK OUT 5-6 TIMES A WEEK WITH WEIGHTS FOR AN HOUR A DAY AND I RUN 2-4 MILES ABOUT 4 TIMES A WEEK

the chemical that stix test for a actually one of 3 ketones types the human body produces. it is also the type that our bodies use for fuel so you could be burning your ketone body as fuel and not have neough left in your blood stream to be excessive and spill out into your urine in high amounts.

ALSO I NOTICE NUTS ARE NOT ALLOWED. WHY IS THIS? ISN'T A CARB A CARB??
nuts are not allowed during 14 day induction per the 2002 version of DANDR because Dr Atkins noticed in the 92 book rules where he allowed them folk abused them during the early days and didn't acheive the weight loss they needed to continue the program. now nuts are allowed on the 3rd addition of carbs in the AOWL phase where hopefully folk will have better portion control and understand Atkins isn't a stuff your face with food and lose weight plan but a feed your hunger with low carb high fat foods and lose weight.

So by eating 75% protein and keeping below the 20 g carb limit am I not thermogenically doing the diet correctly?? I.E. burning fat while keeping my metabolism high??

Should I be eating Cheeseburgers with Bacon instead of lean Salmon w/Salad Greens?? Will that spead up the metabolism??

I'm still eating fats, just keeping them to a low level and eating plenty of Omega-3s... I feel like I have plenty of energy, but I dont want my metabolism to go into slow motion...

I want to keep my protein high because I dont want to lose muscle mass..

Please advise!

for protein, if you are weight training, aim for 1.25g to 1.5g protein per lb of Lean Body Mass

is Atkins ketogenic?? i actually didn't think it was

imho, there is no weight loss or thermogenic advantage to eating ketogenic vs. non. however, ketosis has for me the benefit of reducing appetite.
you can eat healthy fats to be in ketosis.

there are debates about the nut issue. The Atkins plan has changed over time. Some people eat them as long as they stay within the overall carb limits

yep Atkins is a ketogenic diet per Dr Atkins

there are lots of healthy low carb plans out there. Just as there are lots of demoninations within the Christian faith and each while having the same basic belief in Jesus as son of God the methods of worship and other beliefs differ between them.

The same can be said for low carb diets. All believe controlling carbohydrate intake is the key but the amounts and proteinvs fat aspects of them vary widely too. For example there is PP with a high protein intake, and Atkins with a high fat,and moderate protein intake. I'd suggest you read up on the differences and the science behind them and see which you want to do.
At 232 pounds your protein needs for both growth and cellular repair and glucose production for maintaining your blood glucose levels in a stabel range (per Controlledcarbs who is a nutrtionist) can be calculated by dividing your body weight by 2.2 +/- 10% which would put you 105 grams.

As to your caloric intake you can figure your basal using the forumula Men: BMR = 66 + ( 6.23 x weight in pounds ) + ( 12.7 x height in inches ) - ( 6.8 x age in year ) andf then apply Harris Benedict equation mutiplier for your activity level 1.75
since you didn't tell us how old you are you will need to do your own calculation but I suspect your cals are too low for you to be healthily shedding body fat. since for 1700 cals to be healthy for your activity levels and height and weight you would need to be over 400 yrs old.

Dude you need to increase your fat intake. Seriously.

I lose the most weight when I'm eating the most fat. Get that double bacon cheeseburger (minus bun and ketchup of course). Melt a pat of butter over your steak. Put cheese on your chicken breast marinated in olive oil and garlic.

Even though we do LC, the mainstream "low fat is better" mentality is really hard ditch! Try a week of eating 70-80% fat calories and see how your pee-stix turn deep purple. Just an idea.

Also, regarding nuts, the only ones I eat (which happen to be my favorite) are macadamias. A one ounce serving has roughly 210 calories (190 of those from fat), 21g fat, 2g protein, 2g fiber, and less than 1g net sugar.

I'm on induction, in ketosis, and eat a handful almost daily. I know everyone is different but you might want to give it a shot.

Good luck with the continued weight loss! Oh and consider laying off the Hydroxycut. Some of the ingredients are questionable. I'm a lawyer too and we could have a class-action Hydroxycut lawsuit on our hands someday! Remember ephedra?

AFTERTHOUGHT: Hey I walked away and continued thinking about your diet. You say that you follow that diet to a T. Try to switch it up. I remembered a time a few years ago when I was doing much the same thing. Not so much intentionally, but out of laziness and comfort. I was in a stall and as soon as I inreased my fat intake and changed my foods, the weight started coming off again. I really think you're eating FAR to little fat.

Yes, you definitely need more fats. You're in danger of ketoacidosis at this rate! Although I suspect the excess protein could be turning to sugar in your system. It WILL do that. I love the egg creams that people have been talking about in the Lobby. I make mine with a couple of tablespoons of heavy cream. They keep me pretty full for several hours. I really don't feel the need to snack. I've been really surprised that a liquid breakfast could be so satisfying!

And on the carbs: spinach is rather carby. Romaine or some lettuce blend would be better. Then you could have another serving of veggies at some point, or maybe add some flavor with a little shaved cheese.

I take coconut oil daily, partly because it revs the thyroid, and partly because it's exactly the kind of fat cell membranes are made of, and partly because it's a potent anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, according to studies done at the CDC, U of PA, and...can't remember the third study. And it helps me feel full, too.

One of the great things about fat is that it does make you feel full, and it's not going to turn to sugar in your blood, like carbs and protein do.

It's pretty easy:

crushed ice
8-10 oz. chilled coffee
2 packets splenda (I use 1 packet steviaplus due to sucralose intolerance)
Davinci's syrup (I use a few drops of flavored liquid stevia)
3 eggs
2-3T heavy cream or half and half

Blend it up!

Some people have posted that they use Eggbeaters if they can't handle the thought of raw eggs. Some add some coconut oil for the health benefits, and to raise the fat content (I'm going to start doing this).

You can vary the coffee and the syrup flavorings. For example, the original poster was doing a white chocolate/macadamia combo for awhile. I'm doing mostly English Toffee with Trader Joe's Terrazzo coffee, my new favorite. My daughter's ballet academy carries locally-roasted Chestnut Cream as a fundraiser--can't wait to try it in this!!

Mmmmmm....just made myself want one of these, since I haven't eaten yet this morning....

MORE CALORIES, LOTS MORE FAT (ADD COCONUT OIL), LESS PROTEIN, ADD SOME MORE CARBS AFTER YOU WORK OUT. THAT'S THE ONE TIME WHEN YOUR BODY CAN REALLY USE THE EXTRA CARBS.
