I survived the trip with my Atkins-hating parents!

And it wasn't that bad. My mom even commented that she had misunderstood what it was all about, especially when she saw me eating all sorts of veggies. I brought my recipe book..my dad was willing to try the flax/tofu shake that I make regularly (not sure if he really enjoyed it though!!), and they really didn't hassle me, except for trying to get me to eat more. I'm 36 years old, but they still try to pile the food on, just like they did when I was growing up!! My mom is still of the mindset that 60% should be starch on a plate, i.e. loads of rice or a potato, usually both.

My husband and I even got to go out to dinner alone a few nights, which made dinners easy. Nothing like a steak and salad at Outback. Yum!

Anyway, I'm excited to be home so I can make my regular l.c. foods once again and get back into my regular exercise routine. I didn't lose any weight, but I didn't gain any either.

Kris
p.s. We went to Palm Desert. I highly recommend hiking in Joshua if you are down that way. It's one of those areas that everyone needs to see. Truly amazing!

Believe it or not, the shake is amazing! I got it from sugarfreesheila's website and made a few changes to it. I know..I thought tofu? Flax? Gross!! But it's amazingly good, and believe me, I'm what you call a 'supertaster', meaning my tastebuds are hyper-sensitive.

Congrats! I know this woe can be difficult for others, which makes it difficult for us too. My dad thinks I'm nuts and my mom apologizes for anything she eats-- neither of those behaviors makes eating around them easy! You survived them without gaining

Thanks, guys. I'm hoping they'll eventually realize that this is simply a way of eating. They even started pushing their habits on our kids (10 and 6), i.e. giving them much more food than we normally do and pushing them to finish it. I had to step in and take food away. I explained that at home we always give them a little bit, and if they finish it, they get more. We NEVER force them to finish what's on their plates or give them more than they can comfortably eat. Neither of our kids have a weight issue (it's a non-issue), and I refuse to let it become one. We dish out, they eat, they stop when they are full. Period. It doesn't matter if it's healthy, when they say they are full, we believe them. So what if they are hungry 2 hours later? We feed them again, always a healthy snack.

As much as I dislike putting my foot down, we are the parents, and I refuse to go down the path that I did as a child. Our kids learn eating habits from us, and as long as they see us eating healthfully, they hopefully will get in the habit of just naturally eating that way. It makes grocery shopping easy too. I just don't buy junky stuff. I don't let them eat much, if any, Splenda or artificial sugar though. They stick to fruit and I bake from scratch (we are big time Trader Joe's fans here), so that I know exactly what goes in them. I try my darndest to not let them get any partially hydrogenated stuff or HFCS by being a completely anal label reader!! I let my husband sneak out to get his junk if he wants it, and he keeps it at work. I honestly think this is why our kids are literally never sick. They have perfect attendance so far this year, and I cannot remember the last time they visited the doctor other than a check-up. I think it was probably 5 years ago..

I slowly gained 9 pounds over the past 6 months, mostly because we are a military family and we were between homes. My eating and exercising schedule was completely messed up (no way to exercise when you're driving from D.C. to CA).

Enough rambling..time to start dinner, husband just came home..Kris

Parents and other relatives will tell you what you should do. Great job of keeping up your way of eating even in face of temptation.

At my mom's we do cafeteria style so that each person only puts how much they want on a plate. So I put a little bits of food, then seat down and eat. If afterwards I want more I get more. Everyone is really good about different types of diets. No one pushes food on anyone especially desserts.

My only problem is that my sister makes wonderful desserts and it is just hard not to taste one. Sometimes I just have one bit and savory it.
