if you are reading the sticks... they sometimes can be off for many reason....

time of day, what you just ate, if the sticks are in date, drinking lots of liquids affect it....

don't worry to much about the sticks.... and remember if you are doing the diet right, you are burning fat and you are in ketosis...

For some there is some appetite but as far as it being the reason for weightloss, it means nothing other than insuring most will not over eat and still be in the magic of ketosis.

The creation of a calorie deficit. The average self-reported calorie intake decreased from 2,025 cals/day to 1,535 at week 12.

Urinary ketones reflect serum ketone concentration but do not relate to weight loss in overweight premenopausal women following a low-carbohydrate/high-protein diet.

Journal of the American Dietetic Association, Volume 105, Issue 4, Pages 608-611

M. Coleman, S. Nickols-Richardson

ABSTRACT

This study examined the effect of a low-carbohydrate/high-protein diet on serum and urine ketone body concentrations.

Thirteen overweight premenopausal women aged 32 to 45 years consumed 20 g carbohydrate/day with liberal intakes of protein and fat for 2 weeks; thereafter, carbohydrate intake increased 5 g/week for 10 weeks. Women were weighed and provided fasting urine and blood samples to detect urinary ketones and quantify serum ketone concentrations, respectively, at baseline and weeks 1 to 4, 6, and 12.

Women lost 8.3%2.8% of initial body weight by week 12. Serum -hydroxybutyrate production was highest at week 1 and declined weekly, with all values higher than baseline (P.05). Each week, serum -hydroxybutyrate was correlated with presence of urinary ketones (P.05), but no relationship was found between weekly weight change and serum ketone production.

Urinary ketones are detected in premenopausal women complying with a low-carbohydrate/high-protein diet and are associated with serum ketone concentration. However, serum ketones do not reflect weight loss.

thats 64.4 It was around 80, but I have made several trips out of town since June and put some of it back on... Right now I am shooting for 30 lb by November 10 and would like to have 100 off by december....

I don't stress over the gain.... I have worked really hard at this and stuck with it till the out of town trips...... this last trip I gained 14 lbs in 7 days.... but i retain fluid really easy... as soon as I eat carbs of anykind, I start retaining...... I got back from the last trip on Tuesday of this past week and started Lc again wednesday morning and by saturday I had already lost 6.8 lbs....

but, I am back now and more dedicated then ever to finally make my 100 lb mark....

Laura one thing for sure if you stick with it.... do like the book says the weight does come off... My DB went from 550 to 270.... he looks great... he still has alitte more to lose before he goes an has surgery.... but he is more dedicated then anyone I have every seen.....

Hello XBEYONDTHEBEAUTYX i WAS doing South Beach for a little while, and they dont use Ketostix to check their Ketosis... because you eat things that wouldnt put you in Total Ketosis... i know from experience... i tried the Ketostix and they just barely hit the first color on the box... so i questioned a few people and they told me that they are not concerned with getting in Ketosis... i know on Atkins this is a big thing... i have not started yet, but i think this is the way IM going to go and im going to try Very Hard to stay PURPLE!

actually if you are in a calorie deficet you are in ketosis since all it is is the by product of oxidizing fatty acids for energy. When we don't have enough oxigen to convert all the acetly CoA to ATP the body bundles the Acytel CaA and some of the waste products of the fatty acid oxidation in to molecules called ketones.
Stix only measure the concentration of the ketones in that particulare urine which was caused by an excess of one type of ketone in your blood stream at the time that urine was made. it will change constantly trough out the day based on what you are eating how much you are exercising and even how much water you drink since the stix number is actually a concnetrationof ketones not just are there any at all.

Since Atkins is a Ketogenic plan with the majority of our dietary cals coming from fats it is very important to be burning fats for fuel so folk over rely on those stix but you can never turn those stix any color cause you are burning off the type of ketone body the stix test for( 3 known types in the body). Other plans because they are noit fat based can be burning a small amount of body fat after the diestary proteins and carbs are metabolized and never change a stix which is why they don't care. Their ketone levles will and should fluctuate.
If you are eating your atkins properly once you burn off your body stores of glycogen you will be in ketosis untiul you reach your CCLM while testing out the carb ladder in OWL.

happy low carbing

total to what should have been my healthy goal weight took 16 months, but dumb me was obsessing about scale numbers and struggled on for another 6 months to shed another 10 pounds thinking I was overweight cause the BMI said so.

thanks. remember to go by body fat % not scale numbers as you morph your body eating your Atkins and doing the mandatory exercise part of the plan too.
