Technically you aren't doing Atkins if you skip induction, but there are plenty of other plans out there that don't require an induction period.

A Low glycemic load plan doesn't require an opening phase. You just start out doing on day one what you'll do on day 10,000.

Induction is important because it helps you start from square one, both with weight loss, puts you in a meaningful state of lipolysis, and allows you to find out which foods were causing you problems to begin with. I love induction! It's tough, but wow! It's worth it!

It depends. The purpose of induction is really to rid yourself of cravings, get into ketosis and jump start your weight loss. You can lose weight without doing induction, but induction serves a purpose. And it's only 2 weeks.

Induction makes a controlled carb life easier. It's detox. Getting the crud out of your system, and out of your life makes it easier to stay away from it, one you have broken the cycle of empty carbs.

Induction serves a great purpose in my opinion. It cleans the crap out of your system and helps you break the addiction to sugar and carbage. Skipping it will short-change the experience.

Because you have so little to lose & are wanting to maybe skip the Induction phase of Atkins, may I suggest his book Atkins for Life? (it is a great book for anyone who has less than 20 lbs to goal) On that program, you start out at 60 g of carbs and adjust accordingly - by either raising or lowering your carbs depending on if you're gaining or losing. I followed Atkins for Life and dropped 32 lbs in about 5 months.

There are lots of great LC plans out there that don't require Induction. The one I chose was Protein Power. Never gave up fruit, never once worried about ketosis, just lost a lot of fat & weight.

I never did any kind of induction. I just started eating in a way I knew I could stick with for the rest of my life. Carbs are about 30-60 per day (mostly from veggies and some from berries), I eat a lot of good fats (coconut oil and evoo), and avoid grains and high fructose corn syrup like the plague.

The problem as I see it is where do you start and how do you know how many barbs you can't and can have. what food you can and can't have. Do you think that it will be too hard is that why you want to skip it ?

you could skip induction but that would be like building a house without a foundation. Think of your new way of eating following Dr Atkins plan for life like you would if you were building a new home for yourself.

You'd want a very strong foundation built of top quality material, with the best craftmanship you could find and allowed to cure for the proper amount of time so it could support the rest of the house for the rest of your life. that is what induction is about. (I'm sure You have checked out the other low carb plans and picked Atkins for your life long way of eating. )So you say I have a blueprint ( that would be Dr Atkins book) here for a making a healthier smaller me. First I need to stop eating those high carb junk foods. I need to learn to feed only my hunger, I need to learn to enjoy healthy fats and proteins, I need to make exercise a daily event for me and I need to rid my body of the foods and chemicals in them that I am addicted too like caffeine and sugar. I need to learn to enjoy the taste of real veggies without all that sugar.
Doing induction for those 14 days will buyild you a strong foundation on which you can continue framing your house with those OLW foods. It will also give you 2 very important pieces of information after 14 days what is your metabolic resistance level and what will range will your CCLL fall in.

You could skip Induction or make modifications in the rules, but then you don't have a proven blue print for success.

Happy low carbing

2big (or anyone else), what is your opinion about the efficacy of doing an Atkins induction for someone who has been eating quite low carb? The last 10 days or so, I've eaten around 45-50 total carbs (not net). And before that, just general low carb (no sugar, no white stuff, no HFCS). Since 8/1 I dropped 10 lbs. But I'm interested in what you write here, it makes sense.

Do you think a formal induction would be useful in terms of determining my metabolic resistance, even if I've been eating relatively low carb the last few months?

ETA: more info---a year ago I followed a VLCD liquid protein PSMF. Lost 65. Health tanked (adrenals). In the process of healing over the last year, I've gained them all back plus another 8. Between 2003-2006, history of low carb (Atkins induction), off wagon, induction, off wagon, etc. This experience with my adrenals has woken me up, fortunately, to health. But in terms of the benefits of formal Atkins induction--any thoughts on its efficacy for one with such a history as mine?

since you are already lower carb your glycogen reserve loss during the initial days of the induction will not be as large so your total weight loss could be lower then the charts show for your level of metabolic resistnace but you never know till you try it.

Besides just following the rules for 14 days is a huge change in mind set. you are taking back control of your foods while following Dr Atkins rules ( his blue print) and resisting temptation at every turn. Many folk feel a great deal of pride and accomplishment in doing the full 14 days cheat free by the book. Survive 14 days of induction and you should be albel to do OWL with relative ease.

Myself, I love induction...gets you over cravings and like the others say gets the crap out of your system. Yet it seems to me that if you are lowering your carb intake and leaving out sugars (hidden carbs) how can you go wrong? A healthier food plan is just that healthier. Best of luck either way...Really, I love the no cravings and energy that induction gives...ooops, addiction showing.
