pork rinds and ketosis
Do pork rinds have any negative effect on ketosis? In theory, they shouldn't, but my husband, who is also on Atkins, experiences a drop according to the ketostix if he eats them. It may be a coincidence, since we are following the induction plan religiously.

I don't eat them for snacks but I use them when I cook for breadings or in place of like bread crumbs or crackers in my meatloaf and never had a problem. If you look at the ingredients several brands do have sugar in them so if you eat a lot of them it might be possible.

rinds
These pork rinds don't have sugar, so I'm at a loss. I have read that ketosis is sensitive to all sorts of changes, time of day, exercise. I'll chalk it up to coincidence and live with that since he is still losing.

Ive noticed that with the flavored pork rinds, on the back they say they have no sugar content in the nutritional info area, but if you read the ingredients, they often list sugar or maltodextrin....so be careful. I've never had a problem with the plain ones, but the BBQ kept me stuck for that reason, I believe.

Actually, I think you've hit on the answer -- and the pork rinds are not a factor. Personally, I've never really registered on those sticks because of the huge amount of water and tea that I drink. The ketones are just too diluted -- yet, I'm obviously in ketosis and losing. I don't think that I'm alone in that situation, either.

actually if you look at the pork rind package they are also a high protein food and excess protein will be convert to glucose in the body so they can be effecting his ketosis if he is over doing the ttoal protein intake for the day.

Pork Rinds
I have also noticed a decline in my ketone levels after eating pork rinds.
I did some research on this: Pork rinds are not supposed to be a complete protein source, because they are low in tryptophan. There are seven essential proteins: valine, phenylalanine, methionine, lysine, leucine, and isoleucine. Of these, pork rinds are highest in leucine (1 serving = 465 mg), However, pork rinds are relatively high in non-essential amino acids glutamine (1068 mg of glutamic acid per serving) and glycine (1669 mg per serving). These amino acids are glucogenic - the body will convert them to glucose during fast. That's why eating pork rinds lowers your ketostix readings - they really do impair ketosis. (I'm not clear by how much) A bit of a downer huh? I guess if your goal is weight loss, and you're losing weight while eating pork rinds, you don't have to worry. My goal is actually to stay in ketosis without losing weight, so I think I'm going to have to cut back on the pork rinds. |
