WHY ONLY 3 CUPS OF GREEN LETTUCE?
We are suppose to only have 3 cups of veggies, but green lettuce only has 1 gram of carbs per cup. Why can't i have more as long as i don't go over 20 grams during induction? By the way, hello everyone i am new, this looks like a great board with high traffic flow. I don't know all the details about Mr. Dizzy, i just read over his deceased thread. I did not know him at all, but it is always sad when a person is called home.

That's a good question that I'm sorry I can't answer... I pretty much ate unlimited legal veggies when I did induction and lost 11 lbs. in two weeks my first go on low carb!

If you stick to 3 cups of induction allowed salad veggies/other allowed veggies, you're about guaranteed to stay well under your 20 grams. I've always believed this guideline was a safety-net & easy to follow for everyone. If you have a food scale & can accurately (or darn close) figure your carbs, then I say eat more veggies. I certainly did. I have yet to meet anyone that got fat off an extra cup or two of salad.

What I remember from the book was 2 cups of salad veggies and 3/4 cup cooked. He allowed for extras on the salad, if I recall, not just lettuce. Plus there's cheese on the diet - 1 carb per oz, etc. The carbs sneak in there. Even vitamins have carbs usually.
It was Dr. A's rule of thumb to help people not take a high carb hit and go over 20g a day. |

My understanding is..3 cups of salad is NOT just lettuce. If you add other vegies from the acceptable veggie list..each cup of veggies could be 3-5 carbs..so that bumps you up to 9-15 from veggies. You then fill in the rest with eggs, cheese, cream, dresings, etc. and it's quite easy to hit close to 20 (or over if your not careful..that's why you have to look for the limits in small print at the bottom of the induction page)

I measure everything seperately if I make a salad, I eat more than 3 cups of lettuce, and then count whatever else I add, but just measure and count the carbs. Use your jugdement, 3 cups of "salad" is a guideline.

I know certain veggies are higher in carbs then others but if you are only eating leafy greens as your daily veggie intake (lettuce, spinache, etc...) then more then the three cups shouldn't hurt.
