Reaching the first Atkinsversary
I am now stalled and have been for 3 months. However, I thought if I listed some of the positives from a whole year of Atkins I could make myself cheer up about the stall. So here goes:
Met a lot of great people in chat who really want to help Pen pal with Shykins, who is my rock for support and a GREAT friend!! Went from size 44 to a size 20 Lost 47 lbs Am able to exercise 3 hours a week without dying from it Can buy XL regular size clothing--no more plus sizes! No more ugly clothes I can wear jeans comfortably now and couldn't before Have cut my blood pressure pills down to 1/4 pill and have good readings Threw out the cholesterol meds--don't need them anymore No more ankle swelling I don't look like the same person as last year Many people who haven't seen me in a while don't recognize me I have lots more energy I can bend over and cleaning the house is easier Married life ROCKS now/ hubby can't keep his hands to himself-- yeah!Put hubby on Atkins and controlled his diabetes--no more meds for him Started wearing make up again and in general, caring how I look Gained self esteem and self worth ***OK, feel a bit better about this stall now! Wow, didn't realize I had "gained" so much! ![]() |

I appreciate your comments! I am considering trying SouthBeach to break this stall. If this stall has not broken by May 9th, I am making the switch. The plans are alike except that SouthBeach is more restricted with fats and has a few more carbs. Maybe my body has adapted too well to Atkins, lol! I will come back to Atkins eventually, either when I stall on SouthBeach, if I can't break the stall anyway and definatly for the maintenance phase. I love the Atkins plan and can't see giving up--the food is too good! Just shaking things up a bit. What do you guys think about that?

Congratulations on your weight loss! Loved your list - you should be very proud! Creacked up when I read your comment about married life rocking...it had the same effect in our house too! Gotta love that aerobic exercise!

I think you can still do atkins and adapt the ideas you like about South Beach.
If you want less fat - choose leaner meats, don't use butter and cream, don't eat as much cheese If you want to see how more carbs will work for you - add five carbs per day a week - complex carbs...low glycemic fruits, yams or sweet potatos, nutty breads, quinoa etc. It depends on the kind of person you are (although it seems like you are strong-willed...you've stuck with Atkins not only for a year but through a 3 month stall...good for you!!). Some people can't take that SB allows grains and they just can't seem to keep their carbs low enough to lose. But I do think you are onto something by adding a few more carbs and seeing how your body reacts. It's not a cookie cutter plan...everyone has different foods that stall them or trigger cravings. Make it work for you!! Good luck! |

Taking Advice From 66
As I said in my other post, I think you may be right!
I checked out SB and it looks pretty bland for my tastes. I will get to goal eventually. I will continue to post progress and yes, I WILL have progress! This weight loss is not a matter of "if" but instead is a matter of "when". |

Congrats & question to ask..
Hello!
I was very encouraged to read about your progress with atkins. My husband and i started atkins 4-5 weeks ago. i think I've lost about 5 pounds so far, but its hard to tell. The scale is so up and down but my husband says he can really see a difference. I am so happy for you that you've gotten rid of your meds. -and for your husband too. how exciting that must be for you both! The question i have is regarding the medication for high choloesterol. My mother-n-law started atkins at the same time with us and has made progess also losing 5 pounds, but recently when she had bloodwork done it showed her cholesterol being really really high. She was afraid to tell the dr. that she had been on the atkins diet- But did attempt to ask him about atkins for controlling high choloesterol. He didn't even want to hear the word "ATKINS"! So she came home with a new perscription medication instead. I felt so bad for her because of all the progress she was making. And we will never know what her cholesterol actually was before starting atkins because it had been 2 years since it had been checked. Her dr. didn't recommend atkins. I was curious to know how your dr. responded. and if he/she encouraged atkins to help you get your health under control. If you have any other information that i could lend her that would also be great! Thanks, and keep up the good work! Jservant2 |

Wow! You guys are the best! About cholesterol, not knowing what it was before Atkins does make a mess of things. Some people have high cholesterol without diet causing it-- hereditary or pre-disposed. I would stay on the meds and get re-checked every 3 months or so and decide what to do according to labs. As far as Doctor's go, I have a really cool Doctor. All he said was that Atkins doesn't work for everyone but to try if I wanted. He is very non-judgemental. He has never lectured me about anything but instead just provided treatment, including treatment for high blood pressure which I never had until I reached my highest weight. I have always adored him for that and have never dreaded a visit. Until this last year I refused to be weighed in the front where others could see and he understood. My husband has a different Doc and we just said we were on a low carb diet when we went back for lab results. Docs response was "Aren't we all supposed to be?". And then he told us my husband no longer needed diabetes meds and patted him on the back... Sometimes you have to watch the phrase "Atkins" and refer to as "A Low Carb Diet" in order to be listened to rather than lectured. I say the labs--before and after or every 3 months will tell the story. By the way, I lost just fine still taking the cholesterol meds and the Doc said stay on them anyway and I did not (shame on me) but my readings are still under 200. I just want to be free from all the meds because I caused the problem in the first place and I know I can do it!

I am doing SB one day and Atkins the next. Seems to be working as I am finally one whole pound down and have been for 2 days in a row! Yeahhhhh! However, I was very turned off when I read SB because it states that Atkins allows virtually no carbs! We all know Atkins allows 20 carbs on induction of which 80% are from veggies and more are added each week. It is statements like this that give Atkins a bad name but I suppose it has sold a lot of SB books. Also, SB has bland foods for the most part but Atkins is delicious! I am finding SB useful as a stall breaker though but would find it impossible to stick with long term. Atkins gal all the way!

I am amazed at how kind the scales have become. Another pound down again--now at 51 pounds lost! I suspect I have had a yeast imbalance for years. The antibiotics (I think) really aggravated my symptoms and caused the stall. Since cutting out all yeasty foods such as most cheeses, nuts, mushrooms and pickles I have noticed faster and steadier weight loss and so has DH. In fact, this is the fastest loss we have had since induction. I have also had a variety of yeast symptoms disappear. I admittedly feel better than I can recall in a long, long time. I also see my blood pressure is dropping once again. I am already down to 1/4 pill a day and I don't think I will even need it much longer.
Hail to Atkins! ![]() |

Last time I did Induction I ate mushrooms on everything and as for cheese I can not live without it. I eat a lot of cheese! There is a whole chapter in The New Diet Revolution anout Yeast problems!! If I have a problem with it I just cut back on the mushrooms nd cheese and things pick back up! I'm glad to here things are rolling along again. I am in deep Ketosis and seem to be lossin about a pound a day. I know mostly water, but the inches will go with it. It did the same way last time. I'm glad you've stuk with it and keep up with your success it motivates me!!! I too can say I'm in the 50lb club!!!
