Glucophage and dieting
Good Morning Everyone,
First I want to start by saying that I'm a newbie and really enjoying this forum. I'm begining Atkins Induction AGAIN (sigh) but was prescribed by my OBGYN who was also on Atkins a prescription for Glucophage to assist with weight loss. I am not diabetic but he said many docs are prescribing for weightloss assistance while on a low carb diet.Anyone heard of this before or taking it to assist? Please lend me your advice and experiences. Thank you very much in advance... |

I found this article from Web MD while doing a Google search...I'm considering trying it... please let me know you're thoughts and by the way Atkins is a way of life for me and I don't consider this a crash diet. Thanks for your comments and support.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Diabetes Drug May Fight Obesity By Jayne Garrison WebMD Medical News Dec. 26, 2001 -- Obesity is soaring among American teenagers, an indication that they may face higher risks of diabetes and heart disease in years ahead. Now, a new study published in the journal Metabolism indicates that help may come from a common diabetes drug long before teens develop disease. The drug Glucophage helped dieting teens lose significantly more weight than others on the same diet. Pediatricians at the University of Tennessee School of Medicine put 24 obese adolescents on a low-calorie diet: 1,500 calories a day for the girls and 1,800 calories a day for the boys. They also gave half the teens Glucophage and half a placebo. After eight weeks, dieting teens who took the placebo lost 3.8 % of their body weight. But those taking Glucophage lost 6.5 % of their body weight -- nearly twice as much. The teens taking Glucophage also had lower blood levels of fasting insulin, leptin, cholesterol, and triglycerides -- substances thought to increase the risk for diabetes and heart disease. The treatment was not without risks. Five of the 12 teens taking Glucophage complained of mild side effects, including nausea, dizziness, and loose stools. But none were so uncomfortable that they stopped the medication. Glucophage regulates the amount of glucose -- or blood sugar -- in the body. A high level of glucose is often the first sign of developing diabetes. Still, the researchers note that larger and longer studies are needed before doctors can know whether the drug offers therapeutic benefit for obese teens decades before they develop any disease. |
From waht I understand about glucophage, it is supose to help those who are insulin resistant. Meaning it makes the cells more sensitive to recieving energy from food when digested. Many pople will feel loss of appetite and the major side affects are stomach upset and bathroom problems and its probably the loss of appetite that helps with weight loss.
It is a diabetic drug but MAY work for others who have this metabolic disorder. I havent heard the medical industry releasing it as a form of weight loss, only people raving about it that they have lost weight on it. I am currently taking it for IR and PCOS but I have to tell you that it order for it to work most effectively, you have to maintain lower carb way of eating and exercise. Otherwise you are just working against it...And it may take from 1-6 months before you notice a difference at all. What is the dosage does she want you on? Ive read a lot about Glucophage off this website: www.soulcysters.com or here is another article on Glucophage if you're curious www.drugs.com/cons/Glucophage.html |
I've taken glucophage
Last year I took glucophage and that was when I had lost overr 60 pounds. I was insulin resistant and my endocrinologist put me on the glucophage. At first I had the runny stool but as you continue, in spite of increasing the dose, the loose stools subside.
I tought it was amazing. Not to mention, I am no longer insulin resistant! Marieze |
I'll have to check the mg and dosage on the bottle. I haven't begun to take it but I must admit it is tempting. I'd rather do it the natural way which is why I haven't taken it. I was really curious whether other docs have prescribed it to non-dibetics as well?
