question for atkins nutritionalist about fiber
Hi! I am an employee of a Low Carb store in Dallas, and I have a question from one of my customers about dietary fiber. He is interested in how many grams of fiber the body is able to digest per day. Is there a real benefit body wise in netting carbs (carbs-fiber only) other than bowel function?
For instance (and this is only hypothetical), let's take a can of Eden's black soybeans. With 8 grams of carbs and 7 grams of fiber per serving, it seems a bargain to eat for it's 11 grams of protein. If he were to eat nothing but soybeans for several days (and i don't think many people would want to be around him if he did ), would he gain weight due to the higher carbs than he may be eating normally (let's say 4 cans per day for a total carb count of 84 grams)-73.5 g fiber? net 10.5 g carbs. Or would his body know to differentiate between fiber carbs and other carbs? any other input from board members is welcome as well.

Sometimes, it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I will try again tomorrow." Unknown I will ALWAYS treat myself with dignity.

Your body definitely knows the difference between fiber and other carbs. How much fiber one can consume depends on several things. One, how much fiber are you used to consuming. Don't all of a sudden hit your body with 60 g of fiber a day. It's something that you need to start in moderation. Most important--make sure you drink at least 8 to 10 glasses a day if your fiber intake is high. You absolutely need it to keep things going like you would like. Lots of fiber with insufficient water will give you nothing but trouble.

Hi, I am a nursing student and I can tell you this, Dietary fiber is non-digestable in the human body. They provide bulk to the stool, help to lower cholesterol and maybe likely to reduce the incidence of colon cancer, obesity and cardiovascular disease. In other words, Eat up! Hope that helps.

My DH's doctor told him to eat between 25 & 35 grams of fiber a day. We both easily get this much in our LC approach, both getting between 30-35 from vegetables & fruit & occasionally some soy.
