Why Am I So Cold?
I've wondered ever since I started Atkins. Yes, I've lost a lot of fat, but I am still far from skinny! I saw a couple of threads on this subject, but mostly people were just guessing. I know I'm not alone in this, so could you explain, please? Thank you.

Fat is insulation, so the fact that you lost some may explain it. Or just the fact that it is winter!
There is no research to back up these reports, and it may not just be those successfully following a low carb approach to eating, may happen in any approach to eating that is resulting in weight loss. |

I was freezing cold all the time too but now I have started to regulate better. I think your body just needs time to adjust to not having as much insulation.

I lost 55 pounds on low fat, low cal several years ago and was cold for about 1.5 years. It eventually went away, but I believe that the body has to adjust to such a big change. Unfortunately I gained some of that weight back, but am doing well and have been cold the last few weeks. I take it as a good sign.

Hi Raini!
Have you had your thyroid checked lately? Your comment about soaking in a hot tub to warm up rang a bell with me. I went around for a couple of years freezing my behind off and frequently had to get into a warm tub just to get warm. Being cold all of the time, especially when others around you are warm is one of the first signs of Hypothyroidism. Which I have. Other signs are dry skin, hair, weight gain, although following a lowcarb diet may over ride the weight gain, and not everyone gains weight when hypo., losing the outer third of your eyebrows, muscle aches, and for some, pain in their feet. I got terrible charley horses in my feet, and they frequently felt like I was walking on rocks, fluid retension, fatique, heavy or frequent menstrual cycles, constipation. There are more, but I can't think of them right now. This may not be the case for you, but is just an idea to ask your doc. about. Hope this helps. Love and stuff, Chris ![]() |

Hi Chris- Nope, haven't had it checked lately. I need a new doc, and I've been procrastinating.
Last time my M.D. checked it, she said everything was okay. But my chiropractor (also my boss at the time) checked it and said it was low and I should be on medication. I took that info back to my doc but she didn't agree. I never pursued it. I have a number of things I need to discuss with my new doc. Guess I should quit putting it off. Thanks for the info. Raini |

I'm with Chris...
I immediately thought thyroid too. You can check your own with more accurate results then the Dr.'s test, which frequectly gives false negetive results. I believe it says how in DANDR, pages 269-271. ( I just looked it up!) A simple kelp supplement can help if that is the problem.
Good luck!! ![]() |

Thanks. I remember using that method... it's what the chiropractor had me do, too. But he didn't mention the kelp.
Thanks again!!! I'll try it. Raini |

I disagree. If you have the most common form of hypothyroidism (that would be the autoimmune hypothyroidism, called Hashimoto's), the very last thing in this world you should eat is any form of iodine.
Many, many years ago when iodine was very scarce, many living in the "goiter belt"...(places NOT by the sea) had clinical, iodine mediated hypothyroidism, but NOW...that's in third world countries. If you have thyroid disease, and you are not producing T1, T2, T3, T4, than iodine isn't going to do that for you (diseased thyroids, especially those that are being completely destroyed by invading antibodies look like a little pebble eventually). Unfortunately, only replacing the thyroid hormones is going to help you. Iodine also doesn't do anything for the sex hormones (if your thyroid starts going downhill, so will your estradiol, progesterone as the thyroid cannot function without those...hence the reason why as many as ONE out of TEN women in the US will trigger Hashimoto's when going into peri menopause. Oh, and Dr. Atkins used Armour Thyroid (natural dessicated pig thyroid) for his thyroid disease patients whenever possible. Why? Because there is seen a decrease in T4 to T3 conversion (if there isn't any conversion, there isn't any metabolism) in lowcarbers...Dr. Broda Barns (thryoidologist) did many tests in which the conversion was severely lacking in individuals who ate under 30 NET grams of carb a day AND took in less than 1100 calories. You will need a: TSH, Free T4 and Free T3 testing. "Most" 'normal' patients (without thyroid disease) will have a TSH around a ONE, and FT's in the midway of their respective lab ranges. Pam

To be honest I think everyone looks to deep into it...
Limit your carbs you get cold. When some people carb up they all of a sudden feel WARMER. It's the lack of Carbs..... I have tested it on myself many many times... I eat little carbs, I freeze- Carb up- WARMER. |

Really not the reason in my case. I lost most of my weight at 60 grams of carbs a day. I am now maintaining at around 100/day and I'm still cold. I often end up shivering shortly after eating. So, unless 60 - 100 g of carbs fits your definition of "limiting" carbs (and it might - that is still much lower than recommended), it's not the case in my book. And, if you are correct, that still brings up the question of "why". I haven't read an explanation of why reducing carbs would make one cold. |

I am really sorry. I really was not agreeing or disagreeing with the part about eating more or less carbs. I was agreeing with looking too deeply into it. I did not mean to offend or make light of anyone's situation. I freeze my butt off UNBELIEVABLY. I have developed raynaud's syndrome even. I looked SO deeply into it trying to blame every aspect of my eating. THen I realized I am cold because I have lost way more insulation than I now weigh. I have had all the medical tests and I am just ready to stop worrying and get on with life (wearing a few extra layers of clothing, of course).
I truly did not mean to offend ANYONE with my answer. I hope that you find out the cause of being cold...I KNOW from experience it is MISERABLE and difficult to live with. |

CartBabe~I don't know how you could have offended anyone. You are always so sweet and kind. I also believe that I was cold so long because I lost my insulation. I just wore more clothing.

I am just confused about the whole cold thing. Because I do believe that it is related to low(er) carb. I may have lost some insulation, but not that much. I started out at 142 and was freezing after losing only a couple of pounds. I would love a scientific explanation. ![]() |

I'm not saying it is not lower carb, but when I was cold I was eating a high carb, low fat diet. So, I don't believe that was the case for me.
