Help on what the calories range is...

Dear AN..

We have a little debate going and hope you can clear it up. Dr. A said watching calories was not needed if you stick to the list and eat untill satisfied..of that we are not argueing (LOL) but in his book..he stated that if your a calorie watcher..you can use the 10-12x's weight to calcuate if your calories are too high or too low. I believe the number to use is your Current weight.others say it's goal weight.

My thought is..that if you are say 300 lbs..on Atkins you simply don't need to go to 1300 calories to lose...where as others think that 3000 calories would be rediculous to lose at.

Some believe the 10-12x's Current weight number was a typo..and that it should be 10-12x's goal weight. What's your take?

Hi...

There are two thoughts on this...But for the basal metabolism..
I have heard it is 12 or 10 times your lean body mass..Then you
add for your actvities..

3000 calories does sound ridiculous..unless a heavy person is
exercising like crazy..

But..I have heard that if you go by 12 times your lean body weight
..Like mine is around 108...even though I weigh 132..I would
multiply 108 for my number..then add for your activities..

But it COULD also be goal weight...which would give you more calories..especially if you are lowcarbing..

I can maintain on about 1300 calories..but can't lose on that..for MY particular body...so for me, I would have to go and use the lean body mass.

Lisa: I'm anxious to hear what the AN has to say, too...
At one time he said not to go below 1200 calories a day..

Hey Carolyn,

Yeah..I'm specifically talking about what Dr. A meant by the 10-12x's rule. I know I have my own opionon..that goes agains many I see posting now in the main bb. I see people eating about the amount my haster does per day (LOL) I don't do well personlly if I don't eat. I eat 4-6 small meals and when I looked back at my fitday totals from when I started (at over 250) I basically ate around 10x's my current weight through most of my loss. Others have stated over and over when I post this that that is way more calories then most can eat and lose..I just don't agree.

I really am being very specific here deat AN when you arrive. I'm asking specifically if the 10-12x's weight number DR.ATKINS gave..was for current weight or goal

Thanks again!

I have lost consistantly at 10X-12X my current body weight as long as the carbs were low. I will be anxious to see what was meant by the original statement.

Dr. Atkins was trying to make his book as simple as possible for a general audience. He didn't mean that calories were unimportant, just that your main focus should be on your carb intake, knowing that if you focus on carbs and eat until satisfied, then the calories will take care of themselves. Atkins isn't about calories. Calories are fuel for your body, you'll get the number you need by listening to your body and eating when hungry and stopping when full. There is no specific calorie minimum, but any health professional, no matter what eating approach they are talking about, would never advise to go lower than 1200. If you want to follow a low calorie approach to eating (remember that there are different approaches to eating and some work better than others for different people), than I always advise people to cut down 500 calories a day from what they usually eat. A person would be more succesfull doing that for weight loss (if they choose to go low calorie) than if they calculate their needs by plugging numbers into an equation, since their usual meal planning is not likely to be similar to the number they get in a calculation.

Hope that clears things up!

Umm..well..um (LOL)

Yes and no

Ok..I get ya and I hear ya..but again..not what the debate is about. I will post your reply..and I do appreaciate the response..but Atkins did use a 10-12x's number...and yes, I do know we don't count calories..but as we all often admit..they do count.

So..if you re-read my original question..I'd love an answer to the specific numbers he stated.

I just spoke with our Editorial department and they do not believe that statement was in any Atkins publications. After speaking with the nurse that worked with Dr. Atkins for more than 30 years, she said he may have said it in a Q&A session but just as a quick calculation. And if he said it, he was referring to current weight. If you can provide the quote, I can put it into better context.

hope this helps:

http://atkins.com/helpatkins/newfaq/...mIAllowed.html

from the article:
If you are used to counting calories and are more comfortable with such an approach, the general rule of thumb is to multiply your present weight by 10 to 12 to get the daily caloric range at which you would lose weight. For example a 150-pound woman who consumes 1,500 to 1,800 calories daily should continue to lose weight.

I'm glad I didn't know about that formula before now or I would have tried to starve myself. According to that formula, I should only eat around 1,200 calories per day. In reality, I can eat as many as 2,000 per day and still lose weight, when I need to, or maintain once I'm at my lowest weight. I don't get much exercise either.

Thank you so much! I've been working 50 hours a week..and frankly am too tired to do much but fall into bed at night. I asked if anyone knew where the numbers I had rememebered came from (book..artlicle..website) and no one seemed to know for sure. So again..thanks..going to go re-read..and post it in the other post.
