Another Cholesterol ?

I started lc Feb. 2003 and unfortunately did not have blood work done. At that time I was so over weight and out of shape I just figured that it would all be bad. After 13 months of lc I had blood work done with the following results:
Total 252
LDL 187
HDL 50
TRI 76

Six months later I had blood work done with the following results:
Total 268
LDL 196
HDL 61
TRI 52

I walk daily and have lost 52 pounds (starting 224 now at 172).

What can I do to lower my cholesterol by diet? If I don't eat the protein and fat then I eat too many carbs. Is saturated fat and trans fat the only thing I need to watch when it comes to fat?

I am still wanting to lose weight but become a little fearful as to what the blood test will show when I have them again in March.

Thank you for any advice.

what worked for me was eating LOTS of salmon. I eat it several times a week now, i also limit my saturated fats to below 25grams a day and i dont eat any trans fat at all. Also, i never cheat or go off plan.

Thank you for your reply Matt. I do not cheat. I have had too many carbs on a total of two occassions since I started lc. I have just become aware of the whole trans fat issue and now work hard to eat NO trans fats.
Do you eat fresh or canned salmon? How much and how do you prepare it?
It is my goal to be healthier every day - again thank you.

thats good to hear that you dont cheat
i buy the frozen portioned salmon from wal-mart, they are portioned to 4oz. I grill them in the George Foreman grill and i either eat it in a carbdown flatout bread with some mayo, or i just eat it with a big-mac type sauce that i make. I noticed a huge difference after i started eating it so often, so hopefully it will help you as well. Good luck, and if you have any more questions feel free to ask.

beritz,

First of all, congrats on the weightloss!

How long have you been lowcarbing? With cholestoral, sometimes the numbers appear to get worse before they get better. And remember also that total cholesterol is NOT necessarily the only indicator of heart health!

According to your numbers, you really are doing better, just probably not as quickly as you like! Your tris are down, your HDL is up, and your ratios of TOT/HDL is down from 5.04 to 4.39, (ideal range <4) LDL/HDL is down from 3.74 to 3.21 (ideal range <3).

As far as food recommendations, I'd recommend removing as much processed food as possible from your daily regimen. This includes all the bars, the shakes, diet drinks, sodas, and any other products that don't come in their own natural package. And you need to INCREASE use of natural saturated fat, not decrease it. Avoid corn oils, canola oils and vegetable oils, use peanut oils, olive oils and coconut oils, if at all possible. Here is a link to some hard science discussion that supports the eating of healthy fats:

Also, if you're a female over the age of 30 and prone to hypothyroid issues, you should also take measured steps to avoid all forms of soy in your diet.

Good luck to you, and congrats on your loss so far!
