Moods and Hormones
Hi, I hope you can help me. I've been on this WOL since January and have lost 72 lbs, which I'm very pleased with. My TOM has gone from 5 to around 12 days long, but this last two months I've been almost constantly on. I started working out at the gym every other day the beginning of November, could this account for it?
Also, I have never really experienced the energy gain that everyone else seems to have. My moods have also been quite low, or I seem to be "flat". Please don't think I'm knocking this WOE, I don't want to stop. I take St. John's Wort, Omega 3/6/9 and 5-HTP to try and combat this depression. I have suffered in the past and have been on anti-depressants for 11 years, stopping them last November. I know this WOE affects the seratonin that we have. My DH says that I'm different since I've been on this WOE. That I don't laugh, am very hard to live with sometimes, etc. and that I act as everything revolves around me and this WOE. I feel sometimes very flat and I sometimes can see his point, but I don't realise how I am behaving. I don't really know what I'm asking, but I just wanted to know if anyone else is feeling this same way. I think I read somewhere that St. John's Wort could react this way, should I stop taking it and see if this helps? I'm at a loss really. I'm very confused, I don't want to stop this, I've got 30lbs left to lose. Thank you for letting me ramble. Sandy |

I'm sorry your feeling this way. I"d like to offer my opinion while your waiting for the "professional". May I ask why you quit taking the anti-depressant? If your mood changed about the same time you started the diet it could be that you really do need it. I know it is hard to think about taking medications for depression for a long time, even for life! I have struggled with depression (bipolar) for the past 11 years and take about 5 different medications. I was still struggling when I began Atkins but started to do much better with a month or so of starting ( I also began doing a lot of walking and exercise). It was amazing the difference I felt. The mood problems and lack of energy you describe are signs that the depression can still be a problem for you.
The medications I take did not hinder my ability to lose 80 pounds on this woe. I would think about restarting them if your mood doesn't change. I would rather you be on them and feel good and try to lose the weight, then feel miserable all the time and wonder if it is the diet. This is something you may want to talk to your doctor about. About TOM, alot of women talk about the changes in their periods, although I haven't heard of someone having it for two months. This too, I would discuss with your doctor. Take care, pm me if you'd like.
