salt...

What is the Atkins position on Salt intake. I was looking and just couldn't find the answer. I have to admit I am a bit of a salt fiend...I am wondering if it is hurting my weight loss. Is there any alternatives that would satisfy that craving?

There really is no official position about salt in the Atkins Nutritional Approach, but like everything, it should not be used excessively. But Diana is right that it can cause water retention. It may or many not affect your actual weight loss success, but it will likely affect the number on the scale if you are retaining water. The National Academy of Sciences recommends that Americans consume a minimum of 500 mg/day of sodium to maintain good health. Salt is made up of sodium chloride. But most foods contain sodium, so even if you do not add salt, you are likely meeting requirements. In fact, the problem is that most american consume 4-6 times the requirement since processed foods are so prevelant in our society, and salt and other sodium compounds are used as a preservative. You may want to try other alternatives like what Diana mentioned.
