These nutrients are best absorbed with food, but if taking them at bedtime is convenient for you, it is better than not taking them at all. Remember that just because you take the supplement, does not always mean that they are being absorbed in the quantities that you take them in.
Factors that facilitate the absorption of calcium include: Vitamin D, Vitamin K, Sufficient hydrochloric (stomach) acid, Small amounts of fat, Exercise, and Magnesium Factors that inhibit the absorption of calcium include: Soft drinks, fiber, Coffee, Phytates, Excessive amounts of fat, Sugar, Salt |

I see from the Atkins nutritionist that coffee and soft drinks stops the absortion of calcium, thanks for that info, I never knew that.
I have to take a calcium tablet twice a day, one in the morning and one at night because I have arthritis and alot of bone lost in my spine. Another question for the Atkins nutritionist, when you take calcium will it make the loss calcium in your body come back and repair damage in the bones or does it just keep you from losing more bone mass? Wonder why my doctor never told me about coffee and soda doing this? Also I want to ask, exactly what do vitamins supplements do for your body? What is the best time to take them, with food or in the A.M. or P.M. I know the body can only absorb so much of calcium at one time thats why if you are on 1500 grms. a day that you have to take each tablet at different times of the day. Is it that the body just does not enough vitamins and calcium from food we eat on low carb or any other diet, is that why we are lacking in these things? I am eating healthy low carb foods but my tests all showed I was lacking in calcium thats why I am on calcium and vitamins. Do you think low carb had caused this or does it come just over a life time of not eating right? Was just curious about these things thats all. |
