Help me please!!
I've been on induction for almost 3 months now, three weeks ago i started having diarrhea everytime i ate, it went away. For a week now i've haven't been able to eat because my stomach hurts so bad and my diarrhea started again but worse. Every time i eat. I noticed at first that my diarrhea and stomach pain were worse when i ate more fat. But now it's all the time!
Do you think that my body is telling me that he can't handle the fat anymore? Maybe some of you have experienced something similar or Dr. Atkins talks about symptoms like that in his book. I'm tired of feeling sick like that, please help me! Thanks in advance, Reggiano |

Diarrhea is uncommon in people doing Atkins. In fact, people on Induction are more likely to initially experience constipation. Some people can't tolerate dairy products—and consumption of cheese and cream may cause diarrhea. If this is the case, try eliminating all milk products and see if it gets better. Unsweetened psyllium husks can be added, which act as a sponge, soaking up water and helping form a normal stool. If you don't respond to that treatment, then look at the amount of fat you are eating. If you have been on an extremely low-fat diet prior to starting Atkins, it may take your body a while to adjust.
If dietary fat is not the cause, diarrhea could also result from taking the recommended supplements. Try stopping them for a week, then if the diarrhea goes away, reintroduce them one at a time. So long as you have diarrhea, it is especially important to drink a minimum of eight glasses of water a day to avoid dehydration. But if you beleive that fat is the cause, you can follow a lower fat version of Atkins. Use fish, poultry, lean meats, and low fat cheese (in moderation) and lots of vegetables. Avoid creamy salad dressing; instead use olive oil and vinegar or a mustard based dressing. Eat nuts only in moderation. Don't fry foods, and use lean cuts of meat. Stay away from processed meats such as bacon and sausage. Supplementing with unsweetened, smooth textured, orange-flavored Metamucil daily will help bulk your stools. Take 1 tablespoon in a full glass of water and drink immediately. It may be helpful for you to post a typical menu so that I can better advise you. |

Thank you for replying that fast!
I'm doing everything you are saying, the psyllium, the water, no bacon or sausages...the only thing i can eat that don't bring me pain or diarrhea is plain yogurt. So i'm on a yogurt diet until everything gets under control (i know yogurt is not allowed on induction, but i have to eat something to get my day done). I'll try to be patient. Thanks! Reggiano |

Good grief!!!
The answer you SHOULD have received here is to visit your doctor!!!! If you haven't changed anything in your woe prior to the condition starting, it is not likely to be food related. You need to have a stool culture and parsite testing done. Many infectiond (viral, bacterial and parasitic) can be very serious...and you may need treatment. If all this turns up nothing, THEN adjust your diet accordingly. Good luck and hope you resolve this one way or another. Mandy PS..I'm a microbiologist who specializes in parasitology so I'm not jsut blowing steam here! |

Did you say you were using psyllium? There is the possiblily that that could be causing your problems. About a year ago I was taking ground flax in orange juice. At first it didn't bother me too much, but then almost immediately after taking it I would feel very sick and have diahhrea, etc.
Pysllium, bran and flax are all good for you - or for most people. Some are very sensitive to it or are allergic. I was in contact with a nutritionist and that is what she suggested. If you are taking that, just try cutting that out and see what happens. Good luck! |

I finally found out what the problem was!
I spoke with my naturopath and she told me that my body was probably not digesting the amount of fat and protein i was giving it. So she suggested i take complete enzymes to help me digest my fat....and voilĂ_....that was the problem. All is well now! Thanks to all for your concern! |
