Am I shooting myself in the foot? Milk question.
I have been doing atkins for awhile and everytime I am on plan I loose the weight with no problem. I work out a lot too. I know that to keep in the weight loss range I need to be eating about 30 g carbs and 1700 cals a day. I also workout and lead a very active lifestyle.
I am a sweets fanatic and must have something like that everyday. So to help curb that I have been making a lc custard for my breakfast... just that touch of sweet that I need. The problem was the calories were a bit steep. So I looked on fitday and compared using cream, half and half, and 2% milk. For the recipe if I used cream it was 820 cals and 6.64 carbs, half and half 315 cals and 10.4 carbs, milk 121 cals and 11.7 carbs. The recipe comes out great using 1/2 milk and 1/2 half and half for 218 cals and 11 carbs or using 3/4 c milk and 1/4 c half and half for 169.8 cals and 11.38 carbs. Am I really *not* doing this right if I use the milk? I count them and still stay under the 30 carbs per day, I am losing weight still and I have had no cravings/ binges. My breakfast custard then comes out to 155 cals and 3 carbs.

Milk is often demonized. Even the Atkins folks have taken somewhat of a harsh stand against it in the past (though not all of them).
The reality is somewhat different. A cup of whole milk contain about 12 grams of carbs mainly in the form of milk sugars. As many can vouch milk sugars are difficult to digest. This gives milk actually a fairly low glycemic index value. So, is that 12 grams bad or good? Well, it certainly is better than eating 12 grams of sugar or white flour. It certainly is not as good as eating 12 net grams of spinach/green bean/cabbage. The protein is excellent. The fat is mixed- certainly it is ok for a low carb dieter. The added calcium is great. So, milk really is a personal choice. Don't drink it during induction. Don't drink (or use it) during the initial stages of OWL. My suggestion would be to try adding it later in OWL and see if it hinders your weight loss. I drank about 3 cups a week during the latter stages of OWL and continued to be successful. Hood's low carb milk is a good alternative. lkmjbc3 |

Thanks! It does not seem to be affecting my weight loss at all and had caused no cravings that I can detect. I am actuall only consuming less than 1/4 c per day as the recipe I am currently using calls for 3/4 c and I only eat 1/4 of this recipe per day.
I have looked for the Hood's but have not found it yet except at Walmart... which is a distance from my house and I rarely go. Since it was not causing me problems to have the milk instead and I count the carbs I thought maybe I could continue with it. |
