carb counting confusion
I've just read the AN answer regarding getting enough fibre. My confusion is relating to all the other carbs we count such as in cheese .I am not following induction obviously I am nearly at goal. I wonder how one would add cheese, cream and mayonaise to all of those veggies listed and still be under the 20g net carbs for Induction? The math does not seem right. Are you suggesting not eating anything else that contains carbs not even cheese?

That's one of the reasons that, although eating that many veggies is the ideal, it's not really realistic or practical. I think it would be very difficult to live without eating any cheese, cream or eggs. I suppose you could get 10 grams of fiber from eating an Advantage bar instead of some of those veggies to leave room for eggs and cheese.

Hi Linda sue, I agree the advice flies in the face of eating Atkins I don't touch the bars myself or anything with SA's in fact the only product that doesn't disagree with me is the occasional vanilla Keto shake it has 4gnet fibre and no SA's.
I would like to see a proper menu not just a list of veggies that leaves no room for cheese, eggs mayo in a daily carb count. Angie |

You should never have a bar instead of a whole food such as cheese with the objective of meeting your fiber requirement. If you do include a bar, for an occasional meal replacement, you want to go with a brand that gives you the most fiber and other nutrients. But always focus on whole foods and not products. You want to maximize your fiber requirement while staying in the carb threshold you are allowed, depending on what phase you are in. If your meal planning of whole foods falls short of your requirement, there are various ways you can supplement, such as by adding flaxseed or by taking Metamucil.

AN I don't think you understood my question. I'm at a phase where I'm eating lots of veggies to fullfill my fibre reguirement. My question relates to the list of veggies given by one of you( I know that there are several answering) My question is this :How if a person is eating all those veggies can they fit in cheese, mayo, lemon juice or eggs the count would be way over 20g net at induction levels. Please explain. My comment about eating an Advantage bar instead of veggies/whole foods wasn't serious. It was typed with a touch of sarcasm.

The examples weren't necessarily for an Induction menu. It was just showing how to maximize fiber intake. But for an Induction menu, you want to maximize your fiber from veggies, but not so much that it sacrifices your ability to include other whole foods and still maintain 20 g net carbs. This is why Induction is the time when it is strongly encouraged to take supplements to meet your fiber requirement. In later phases when you are allowed more carbs, you can eat the vegetables that were listed, include the other whole foods, and still maintain whatever carb level you are at. It all depends on where you are at. Just imagine how much less fiber you would be consuming if total carbs were counted rather than subtracting out the fiber and counting net carbs. The emerging science on fiber and blood sugar response allows you to include more vegetables (and more fiber) but vegetables need to be considered just as much as the other whole foods in menu planning.
LindaSue, I had a feeling it was a little sacrastic. I wrote it because I wanted to stress that the Atkins Nutritional Approach now advises to count net carbs in order to allow more vegetables and fiber, not to allow more products. |

Okay I understand your answer now I get lots of fibre from veggies every day and also eat flax muffins so am on track am almost at goal so induction was a while ago. btw Linda sue I love your recipes I customise them for my English tastes sometimes and recheck the carb counts but my whole family enjoys the recipes I cook from your site. A.N I do sometimes make a meal out of green beans, eggplant, brussel sprouts broccoli and zucchini roasted with chilli, olive oil and covered in melted mozzarella. Very tasty and easy if I don't fancy meat one day. Angie |
