Blood Pressure Meds

I was wondering if you could tell me the effects of taking blood pressure meds while on Atkins. Does it really hinder your weight loss? and if so , why? And where can i find out more. Thank you.

my meds have been blamed for slowing my weight loss (5 lbs down in almost 3 months, SIGH). I don't know why--I take a BP lowering med with a built in diuretic (started with 2 separate meds).

It is possible to lose tho....I'm now down almost 15 lbs!!!!

I've lost over 65 lbs while taking BP meds. Some types can cause you to retain water such as procardia and verapamil.

Weight-loss plateaus are often caused not by what you eat but by prescription drugs. Drugs for high blood pressure, especially diuretics and the drugs known as beta-blockers, can make your body extremely resistant to weight loss. Dr. Atkins always gradually tapered patients off blood-pressure medications and replaced them with herbs and dietary supplements. As individuals lose weight and improve other aspects of their health, their blood pressure often returns to normal, eliminating the need for any treatment. You must always discuss any change in medications or addition of supplements with your health-care practitioner.

I started taking AtacandHCT (diuretic in it) about 2 months ago and I gained 12lbs. I've since switched to a low GI diet(rather and strictly carb counting)and started to lose that.

I'm currently taking Benicar HCT for my BP.

I've lost about 20 lbs in my first 2.5 weeks back on a low-carb diet. Granted, I'm exercising every day, but I haven't noticed any problems with the meds.

Good Luck !
