Not good in long term?

I have several people at work who have been doing the Atkins WOE for the past 2-6 years. Today, one of my co-workers told me that the doctors are now saying that you can only do Atkins for 8-12 weeks, then stop for 4-6 weeks, and then start again for 8-12 weeks. Does this sound right? Thanks for your help.

Nope..makes zero sense to me. Why would you get yourself in ketosis..clean your body of bad carbs (like sugar and white flour) and then put it back in??!! You also will NOT get the same lowering of b.p. and cholestral numbers if you go off low-carb for periods of time. NOt to mention having to go through withdrawls and cravings again? NO Way!!

If your worried about your body adjusting..then you can shake it up and still stay low-carb. If you've had no loss of inces or lbs for a few weeks..add 5-10 carbs of veggies for a week..and see if the loss picks bak up. Or if your carb count is say 35..then re- induct for a week and move it back up slowly.

For me..this is not a diet..to go off of..but a way to et for life. So I may shake things up from time to time..but never will I go back to higher carbs. As that's what got me fat in the first place.

That makes no sense.
Why would changing eating habits for the better and exercizing be bad long term?
That is still the ANTI-ATKINS people. Ignore them!

I tend to think they mean the very LOW induction type level of atkins is dangerous for more than that amount of time. Most think Atkins means never having a single carb ever again for the rest of their life! lol That was the 30 years of misconception and ignorance towards Atkins that ensued till now..... and still even now, but at least less of it. But those people you mentioned have been ON it 2-6 years, you say. Where did they get that information. WHAT ''doctors'' are saying this. Pin them down to answers and their sources before believing what people 'say', and make your own evaluations. Once adding carbs to your own CCL..... there is NO healthier way to eat, and no limited time for it to continue.

dont you love these people? They think they know about low-carb and will tell you what you need to do.. i love when my parents tell people.. "he's on this no-carb diet." No matter how many times i tell them its lower carb they still refer to it as no-carb, and im on maintainence.

but there are lots of people that eat almost no carbs, or carbs only from eggs and cheese, for very long periods of time. So it's unlikely the public image will change too much

The problem is is that the media has portrayed Atkins as being about eliminating carbs. The focus of media reports is always about Induction so that is what people who are not familiar with the Atkins Nutritional Approach believe it to be. It is incorrect to separate that one phase out since the Atkins Nutritional Approach is about so much more than the Induction phase. It is true that there is no published research that has been done longer than one year on a carbohydrate controlled way of eating (there are studies still ongoing, but not yet published) and participants of those studies were not in Induction the whole time. Induction is a two week period, however, the time an individual chooses to spends in Induction depends on how much weight they have to lose. The safety of Induction can be supported up to 6 months. If you have gone through the phases and found your ACE, then I congratulate you and wish you continued success maintaining. It is hard to change the public image but we here at Atkins Health and Medical Information Services are making progress every day.

True, and if I had only ONE DIME for every time I had to explain since the 70's that not only is it not NO carbs but not even NO carbs in the first 2 week phase..... I could have bought Bob Atkins out MYSELF! :-(

I wish Atkins would spend more time on a public awareness campaign to clear up the misconceptions. Everyone I talk to (I don't bring it up unless I am around supportive people) thinks that Atkins is NO CARBS, that it is only water loss (good god, I didn't know I lost 40+ pounds of water that I had been slushing around in my body all these years!), that it is not healthy or that you cannot keep the weight off. It makes me so angry!

SaraS,

I agree..but remember that the mainstream media is looking for drama..not always the facts. Just watch some of the morning news blurbs about low-carbing. It's never "stay tuend and see how low-carbing is safe" It's usually more like "bacon and cheese..can this be safe??!!" Drama

Recently (about 1-2 weeks ago) Atkins newsletter had a post about the myths that we're overheard on LOW-CARB boards....yes..low-carb boards. When I posted it here..guess what I got..people argueing about the responses from Atkins. If Low-carb boards don't want to hear the facts of the Atkins approach..how is mainstream America going to listen? *sigh*
