slim fast low carb products

What is your opinion on the new slim fast low carb products?

Can they be subsituted for a meal ?

Will they cause you to get in a stall?

Are they a legal low carb food product for a Atkins dieter?

How many carbs do they have in them? That would be my first question and then what is the nutritional value of the products.
Hope you find out on this board.

Keep in mind that Slim Fast is a competitor to Atkins....

I know a few people that use them on Atkins and have no problems.

I bought a couple of different flavors -

Absolutely HORRIBLE! DH is drinking them.

I have not tried the Atkins Shakes - not sure I want to waste the money.

The only products I'd use would be the shakes... not bad at all... as for the bars, I wouldn't eat them - they have lots of sugar alcohols just like all the bars out there...no matter what brand.

The Chocolate Peanut Slim Fast Snack bars have less than 1 gram of fiber, 6 grams of protein and 14 grams of sugar alcohols. Compare that to Atkins Creamy Cinnamon Bar, around the same size, has 13 grams protein, 6 grams of fiber, and 0 sugar alcohols. The Chocolate Peanut Slim Fast meal replacement bar has 16 grams protein, 2 grams of fiber, 14 g of sugar alcohols, and also contains partially hydrogenated oils (trans fats). The Chocolate Peanut Butter Atkins Advantage Bar, around the same size, has 19 grams of protein, 10 grams of fiber, and 0 sugar alcohols.

Meal planning should focus on whole foods, but for the occasional meal replacement or snack on the go, carbohydrate controlled bars are a great choice. It is best to compare labels and read ingredients to choose the product that is best for you. It may not necessarily be an Atkins product, taste is also an issue and you may prefer the taste of another product. I did the comparisons above with Atkins products because that is the information I had available just to show you how different products can be. In my opinion, the Slim Fast products are not a good choice because they are so low in fiber, contain a lot of sugar alcohols, and also trans fats. But it is an individual purchasing decision that only you can make for yourself.

I just wanted to add, that the slim fast shakes have NO sugar alcohols and NO trans fats.

That's correct, I wasn't comparing the Slim Fast shakes in my previous post, just the bars. But both Atkins shakes and Slim Fast low carb shakes in chocolate have 20 gms of protein and 0 sugars alcohols. Atkins has 1 net carb and 4 grams of fiber while Slim fast has 2 net carbs and 2 grams of fiber. Pretty comparable, so it comes down to taste preference.

I have never tried the bars....just the shakes and the awful taste is not worth it. I really was looking for something to grab on those rare occassions I could not have breakfast. This is definately not it! I may still try the Atkins ones to see if they are better.

I like the Atkins shakes. They have to be ice cold. I like the canned over the powder you mix yourself but like both. Like the AN said it comes down to taste (and nutritional value).

For those who are lofty and never eat what they term "Frankenfood" refer to anything that is packaged - my life is far too busy to cook much. I'd rather spend it with my family. I eat whole "real" foods as much as possible but in reality I have four kids in 6 sports, I sing solo concerts, travel, direct children's musicals and YAHOOOO for some wonderful packaged choices. A few years ago it was just me and my rolled up turkey slices with cheese and bell pepers

How great it is that we have some choices when life is zipping by at the speed of light. Read the labels and you will do fine!!

my favorite thing about Atkins Nutritionals is that they will never use any partially hydrogenated oils in any of their foods. Big thumbs up to them for really caring about our health.

Thanks everyone for your input on this subject. i just wanted to know this because we travel alot and i was keeping a couple of these in a cooler in the truck with us so i could have something to fill me until we could stop to eat dinner.
i do not drink them all the time and thought maybe it woyuld not hurt to have one very now and then, but i feel the same way you do with slim fast being a competor of Atkins.
i will just stay away form them from now on and go with something from Atkins food catalog.
i know Atkins low carb works because i have already lost over 100 lbs. with it and plan to stick with it for life because i am now eating so much healthier and losing my wieght to in the process. i feel better and my blood work always comes back great these days to. so i know how great Atkins low carb is. i know how my body is processing low carb and i have done alot of research on low carb to so i should have known slim fast shakes would not be right for me but i m only human and thought i would try some.
never again, only healthy low carb foods for me.
thanks again for all your input on this topic..................
