Gastric Ulcer... What do I eat??

What can I eat with a gastric ulcer? I'm sick of plain chicken breast or pork. I would love to eat nothing but crackers, but then would I lose weight?? As long as I stay low calorie, and my carbs go up while I heal, I can still lose weight right??

Maybe not the best bbs to be asking if you should switch to crackers.

From my point of view, there are a few considerations:

If you need to change your diet to get healthy, then I would think staying LC would take 2nd priority. However, I'm not convinced you need to give up LC to heal your gastric ulcer tho (but I have no medical knowledge to back that up). I would think you could eat non seasoned meats (maybe avoid beef, I dunno). Make soups using cauliflower and other mild veggies (non starch). Make some sugar free jello, cream cheese recipes (if dairy is not a problem). Eggs should also be tolerated well, I'd think (skip seasonings or adding meat or cheese).

If you feel you HAVE to have crackers, you might look at some of the whole grain choices (like Wasa, I think). Still, I think those might be rough on your tummy, due to the high fiber content.

Hopefully the AN can give you some good advice, but what is your doctor saying?

Doctor just says to keep my food bland. Red meat and dairy are a problem. As are nuts and fats. I think i am going to increase my carbs just to what maintenance level would be, just to get enough bread like foods to settle the acid. I have low carb bread. So, I'm trying small amounts of it throughout the day. Seems to be helping. But I am lucky if I get in 800-1000 calories a day. Yesterday was only 700 calories.

I'm not the nutritionist, but I've lived with ulcers for 10 yrs, and have never felt better than when I've been on atkins...if you don't mind some advice...

I'd avoid dairy and red meat for a while. You may be able to handle cheese, the lactose in cheese is different, but cream and half and half are probably totally out.

Also, COOK all veggies (really, they're easier to digest for some reason). No tomatoes, tho. Lettuce and cucumbers may be ok once your stomach settles down a bit, but heavier veggies - cook.

Coffee should be an obvious no no, same goes for anything with bubbles (sparkling water, seltzer, etc).

Smaller meals are better than larger. Don't get too hungry - that's an important thing for atkins anyway, but it's even more important for you.

Don't ever, EVER chew gum, the last thing you need is to stimulate stomach acid production...same goes for breath mints. I like the breath strip thingys, they work just as well, and don't make me sick.

If you're really having acidy-stomach issues and need to eat something to glop it up, eat - for me, it really isn't a matter of what I ate, as much as I'd feel like crackers worked best, tuna with a little mayo would work just as well.

Fresh fish should be fine as well - just don't cook it with lemon juice or anything acidic.

The trick is really "everything in moderation." You can use things for TASTE - even I cook with hot sauce now, but I don't eat spicy things, and I'd never, ever coat something in it (i've never had a hot wing in my life). I use it for flavoring, a dash or so in another dish.

Just listen to your body - I wouldn't feel like eating things that would make me sick, spicy food, mexican, etc... But if you think you can add a little bit of something and be ok, try it.

You'll get the hang of it. I'm sitting here eating grilled chicken w/ bacon, a slice of melted cheese and a little bit of mayo for lunch. Probably boring to most ppl, but really yummy to me, and I know it won't make me sick.

Bobbi,
Thank you so much. Hearing from someone who has 1st hand experience really helps. I was afraid of "trial & error" to learn what I can eat, because it is just so painful. I know I can't eat Macadamia nuts!
I will take your advice and run with it.
Thank You
Alina

No problem - you can msg me anytime....I know exactly what you're going through.

I can't handle macademias either (or peanuts, or sunflower seeds), I'm better off with almonds. Mind you, I stall weight-loss wise from nuts, but my tummy can take them in small doses.

Bobbi gave some great advice, took the words right out of my mouth! Good luck to both of you, and to all others suffering from gastric ulcers. I have no doubt that you will be successful discovering the foods that are appropriate for you.
