Intake of sodium to not retain water?

Hi everyone. I was just wondering how much sodium i should intake a day in order to not retain water.

I am following Atkins yeast free version becuase i am on BCpill. I drink between 70oz.-100oz. of water a day. I exercise 4-5 days a week.
I retain alot of water. I don't add salt to my meals; they are usually chicken, turkey, eggs, and canned tuna. The turkey and chicken are bought raw with no added spices, sugars, salt, etc. The canned tuna has 500mg of sodium in a 6oz. can. I do watch my portions, eat every four hours, 4-5 small meals a day. I usually have 1-2 cans of tuna in that time span. So i'm wondering if i need to cut back on that?

Any input on this would be such a help. Thank you for reading this.

the RDA is 2000-2500mg, you are probably retaining because of the exercise.. i was having a bad bad problem with that. I stopped exercising and now things are back to normal.. i hate it because i really want to exercise, but i dont want to be up a pound or a pound and a half and have my stomach all bloated out either.. so now i just try to walk as much as i can.

extremely bad, if it wasnt bad i wouldnt have worried about it. My stomach would get huge after i worked out and it looked terrible. I would also be up a pound or so the next day, when i stopped the exercise and kept everything else the same my stomach would go back down and i would lose that water weight. I have no idea why this was happening, i wish someone knew how i could avoid it.

When I was younger and on BC pills I ALWAYS retained water and had weight gain. That could be why you are retaining water. You might want to talk to your MD about a different BC pill. My daughter just had her prescription changed because she was also retaining alot of water.

just a side note on Tuna from first post....

A while back it was all over the news and other talk shows about not having more than 1 can of ALBACORE tuna per WEEK, and no more than TWO cans of Chunk Light! Did anyone catch that at the time.... because of the mercury levels and especially if you have the cans over a certain amount of time. For a while I was afraid to even touch the stuff with 3 full cases in my house [I buy large and love to stock up.... also was on sale]. Then I forgot about it because Tuna is such a staple for me and all of us, I'm sure. I also sometimes eat tuna salad consisting of two cans in only one day and don't know any other way! I could never eliminate it or lower it to only one or two cans per WEEK! [there was a whole list of other potentially dangerous fish, like only eating the safe "farm" smoked salmon instead of the other which is also dangerous, but it's the tuna that I'm most concerned about and can't abide by.]

I'm not an Atkins Nutritionals employee but ..... I've read that only 10 - 15 % of people are salt-sensitive. Therefore most people will not retain water from using salt.

I'm no authority but I was advised to start taking Taurine and B6 for water retention. I haven't had a chance to try it yet but you could look into it and see. Just a suggestion.

I know I am salt sensitive! I retain easily and fast. Use Nu-salt, or a salt free seasoning

Another Camel here and I have found adding extra potassium in each day has helped a lot..on top of watching salt/sodium intake (which includes ditching the soda for me)

Accent

I've always used ''Accent'' [msg] as salt and in place of it, and love it and the potassium in it serves a dual purpose, but the way things are going, that's probably unhealthy also... but I love MSG and it never gives me headaches [which was the only thing I've ever heard AGAINST MSG/Accent].... and I always told Chinese restaurants to put that
into my food instead of salt, after they 'stopped' the MSG so long ago! The nu-salt I find unbearable. They seem to have cornered the market on artificial salt but I can't tolerate it, and have 2 unused shakers it still in my closet. I rarely need salt and am not a salt lover, but love accent. It's in all my salt shakers.

Accent....

Oh yes, Diana, if you haven't tried it you must... it's wonderful. I would equate it to salt, it would be compared to that but more subtle, and it adds a very similar element but it's a much more full rounded flavor. It's what Chinese food USED TO taste like, and since they stopped 'automatically' adding it, Chinese food has never been quite as good, nor the same but you can request it instead of salt. They now pile so much salt in their foods to compensate for no msg, but it's horrible and I always request no salt in my foods anywhere..... they always have msg/Accent because they always use it themselves for their OWN meals lol so it's always on hand, several have told me. I use it on and in everything at home, coat meats with it [along with garlic powder and HEAVY coatings of paprika for more of a barbeque type essense] and in all pot cooking, soups, etc., wherever salt would normally be added, and even where it WOULDN'T normally be added. It gives so much more flavor to things and brings out and intensifies the natural flavors. I can't remember when I DIDN'T use it..... guess NEVER because my mother always did, so I grew up with it. She never used salt either so I never cultivated a taste for salty foods, nor added salt, except occasionally where really needed.... potatoes & corn, which are just a memory to me now anyway :-(
