Can PMS throw things off?
I've been doing Atkins induction for two weeks now (well this coming Monday marks two weeks) and up until yesterday I was doing good with the ketosis sticks (as measurement I know) but all of a sudden today they register as no ketosis going on. And I ate a ton of protein yesterday w/no carbs (ie. no bread etc.) other then those in some very small amounts of veggies. I am in the early stages of the end of my monthly cycle so I'm wondering if all the hormones flowing etc. may be causing this?
I've tried so hard for two weeks and haven't cheated - but to see things like ketosis stop and weightloss cease really makes me doubt if I can continue a diet like this. I have to see results in order to continue. Do you think PMS could be playing a part? Thanks! |

I never register on the sticks during TOM. It must be a hormonal thing. I have all the other signs of ketosis, it just doesn't show on the sticks. I would recommend not testing during TOM. It'll drive you nuts.

That makes me feel so much better knowing that other women have the same thing happen to them. I have played by the rules, but my sticks no longer registered as being in ketosis during my time of the month. Disenheartened, I cheated to make myself feel better. I must admit that that one piece of apple crisp tasted mighty good after going for weeks without any sugar. The weight on the scale the next day didn't make me feel so good though. Fortunately, I am back down to where I was before my cheat. I am still out of ketosis though. It took me 2 days to get into it originally, but it has been over 5 days now and not even pink on my sticks. Guess I need to cut back on my carbs.

Thank you both so much for validating my assumption. Going through all these changes just to figure out what's working and what's not is stressful - but knowing that maybe it's hormones throwing stuff off makes me feel a lot better!

Here's some things to consider and some tips to surviving PMS:
Water retention during menstruation may slow weight loss, especially during Induction. L-glutamine supplements can manage premenstrual cravings for carbohydrates. Just before your menstrual period, evidence of ketones may not show up on lipolysis testing strips. Essential fatty acids, vitamin B-complex, calcium and magnesium may relieve some PMS symptoms. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) can be caused by a hormonal imbalance. If your symptoms are severe, seek out a practitioner who will order blood tests to ascertain your hormone status. Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) exacerbates premenstrual syndrome (PMS) so keep high protein snacks handy. They will help keep your blood sugar level constant and allow you to withstand carbohydrate cravings. If you suffer from menstrual cramps, magnesium may relax uterine spasms. Take 500 mg of magnesium daily throughout your cycle. |
