meat fast anyone??
I've just recently heard of the meat fast (different from the fat fast) and was wondering if anyone could give me any suggestions/advice about it??
isn't too much protein bad for you since it can be turned into glucose? From what i've heard, everyone that's done the meat fast has been successful... how come it works? and what is the goal of this meat fast?? i mean the fat fast is to lower calories, and to eat mainly fats...but is the meat fast targeted towards protein? or fat? Hi, Nixity. Thanks for the words in PM. Was meaning to get back, glad I saw this and was reminded. Wonder why nobody's responded to this. Stumbling across it now for the first time, I was looking for many responses underneath that I wanted to hear too :-( This protein issue has had me scratching my head for quite a while. I'll be waiting WITH you *smile*
Oh..... you can go to the ''challenge'' threads, but having been there, many times and at length, I'm still perplexed about restricting protein, since that's always been the nucleus of 'Atkins'. and all low carbing. Last edited by MAMZELLE : 10-01-2004 at 12:54 AM. |

Nixity,
Any type of fast would ‘work’, since you are restricting yourself from obtaining adequate energy from food and forcing your body to burn its own fuel for energy. But you never want to think about fasting- the focus should be on learning how to eat so that you lose weight and maintain your weight for a lifetime. Even the fat fast can be very dangerous if it is misused. Please take the time to read more about the fat fast at http://atkins.com/Archive/2001/12/21-237659.html There are times when a specific type of fast may be appropriate, but this is only when deemed appropriate by a doctor and done under supervision. To answer your main question, the protein fast has been successful for some because in the absence of carbohydrate, the body will burn fat for fuel. Protein does have the potential to slow weight loss if turned to glucose allowing there to be a source of carbohydrate that the body will burn before fat. So those who do fast in this way may have their weight loss hindered but at that point, they are probably so tired and bored of eating only protein that they find another approach to eating. Which is why you should focus on finding an approach to eating that you can maintain for a lifetime. |

Interesting little note I came across the other day somewhere and been looking for it again, finally found it....
Weight loss won’t last if you fast! The body, especially the brain, requires a steady supply of glucose (energy from carbohydrates) in order to function properly. Glucose is stored in the muscles and liver as “glycogen,” and for every gram of glycogen stored, there are three grams of water. So when glycogen stores are diminished during a fast, water is lost, not pounds. |
