Depression medication
Can you tell me if there are medications for depression that are less likely to slow progress on Atkins? I have taken Prozac in the past, and that's how I ended up needing to lose weight.
I have heard there are some medications that may not cause a weight gain or stall. |

some do, some dont. Welbutrin XL is supposedly the best for weight loss and least likely to make people gain. All of the older ones (prozac, lexapro, zoloft, paxil) seem to keep some people from losing weight, or worse make them gain.

I agree with Matt but you will need to speak to your doctor about this issue.
Do you exercise? |

Thanks, Matt. It's good to know that there are options other than prozac. When it first came out, it was also supposed to promote weight loss, but it made most people, including me, gain. I gained over 50 pounds, and I sure don't want to do that again. I have heard about Welbutrin and will ask my dr. about that next month when I see her.
Yes, I do exercise, but not enough. I walk about 4 miles a week, and I have just started doing yoga. I've never been real active, and I don't want to push myself exercising in a manner that I probably won't keep up for the rest of my life. So I just do what I know I can maintain. Thanks for the suggestions. |

Just a note. While everyone is different, I want to share this - - if I can prevent it from happening to one other person, it will be very worth it.
, For YEARS I was treated with antidepressant after antidepressant - - and it wasn't depression - - it was my thyroid. I lost years of my life - -years I truly don't remember I was so overmedicated on antidepressants (with my thyroid tanked) No doctor had run anything but a TSH - - NONE of them - - not the IM, the Psychiatrist, the other specialists. In spite of all the Blood work and my ongoing complaints of physical symptoms (which indeed DO occur w/Depression). You just really have to be your own advocate IMO. It's really hard to do when you feel so awful - - and when you're paying "experts". While your case may be very different, I urge you to have a full thyroid screening if you haven't already - - including a FT3/FT4 - not just a TSH. I also agree with what Matt said. Wishing you well, Becky

I couldn't agree with you more, Becky! You really need to be proactive with thyroid testing. I didn't realize that there were more tests than just a TSH test until I did some research of my own. You know your own body, I knew something was wrong. I still am not on thyroid meds, although I know I need them. I haven't been able to make an appointment with the endocrinologist yet since my family doctor hasn't sent out my tests results to the endo's office and they won't schedule an appointment for me until that is done. I am so frustrated about this, but that is another story. I am also on antidepressants (Zoloft). Like Becky, I may not need to be on them anymore once I get the proper dosage of thyroid meds. Anyhow, whether or not you think that you have a thyroid condition or not, check out this website that I found doing my research : www.diagnosis.4T.com If that link doesn't get you to Margie's site type in "Margie's Thyroid" in your search engine and I am sure that her site will be listed. Another good site is Mary Shoman's site. I have also read that if you are still taking antidepressants and want to lose weight, following Dr. Atkin's plan and taking a pharmaceutical quality omega 3 fatty acid (fish oil - available thru Netrition) three times a day will help with weight loss. It did for me. I lost 6 pounds the first week of induction when all other diets, including South Beach failed. Anyhow, good luck!
