kidneys

i've already posted this on the other board, but i wanted some other input as well.. altho i did get some great replies. I went to the dr today with lower back pain. i gave them a urine sample and they said i have blood in my urine but no infection. the doctor told me my kidneys were just inflammed and that i was eating too much protein and my kidneys were overworked from trying to process it. i usually eat anywhere between 15-30% of my food intake as protein (according to fitday). she told me take 2 weeks off atkins and add grains, milk, more veggies and a lot of fruit (but i could stay away from sugar and white flour). she lowered my meat intake to 8oz a day.. after the weeks is up she said if i had to do low carb to do south beach but not to go back on atkins. i have had no prior kidney problems that i am aware of and have done atkins as a "diet" 5 years prior with no problems. What do you think?

There has been no research to date that supports your doctors theory.

You may wany to get a second opinion from someone who is more objective and willing to work with you.

You might want to visit the atkins website, find Science Behind Atkins and look for the kidney and "research supporting Atkins" folder. There are numerous studies that have been done using Atkins (36 specificly) without resulting in any adverse event.

Also, 15-20% of calories from protein is what is typically recommended, Atkins only increases this by10%. This is not "excessive" amounts of protein.

If you read the research and have any question, please do not hesitate to ask. Your doctor may want to read this info. as well.
