Too much protein?

AN,

Can you provide any suggestions on the amount of protein one should eat? I know Dr. Atkins did mention that too much protein could convert to glucose and potentially delay fat burning but that is the extent of the message. IMHO too much protein can be a problem for those stalled or not losing more so than too much fat. Are there any guidelines on a range of protein consumption? Specifically the amount of grams not ounces. I've always used the formula of .5 grams per lb of body weight with an additional 10 to 15 grams for muscle repair. Obviously the amount of exercise one gets could affect this number but I'm looking for the average individual.

An average number might be 160-170 grams of protein.

If you are having trouble losing weight, it may be due to an underlying medical condition (thyroid, yeast, hormones) completely unrelated to your food intake.

I know kdog OFTEN points out the numbers used above..........someone would have to weigh an awful lot to get 160-170 grams by using that calculation...avg is pretty general when people on this board weigh from 90 lbs to well over 400 lbs
is there a calculation to use?

IMHO that number is way too high for most individuals. If the RDA is .36 grams per lb of body weight this would mean approximately 1 gram per lb of body weight or more assuming an average of a 160 lb individual. I can't see most people, unless they are serious body builders, being able to process that much protein. As Debi stated, a calculation based on body weight would be helpfu.

Actually, it is not a lot. Here's why:

1 oz of protein has 7 grams of protein.

If you consume 24 oz of protein/day or 8 oz. of protein at each meal it totals 168 grams of protein.
