Why do we get so cold?

I've had days where I'm just chilled to the bone. Its sorta great in the summer time, but winter is the worst! Nothing I do makes it better...piling on the clothes, drinking warm liquids, bundling up in comforters.

I have heard from many boards of people having the same problem.

What can you explain about this and Atkins? Dr A doesn't mention it in his book and I've only seen a few whispers here and there in other low carb books, but nothing to explain why it happens.

Got any info for us?

Thanks

losing a layer (or layers) of fat (which is great insulation).

There is no evidence linking feeling cold with Atkins.

Body temperature varies according to the individual and it is hard to say why some people are always cold when others or hot, or why you are experiencing this. But body temperature is regulated by the thyroid gland, so differences in thyroid activity between individuals may account for some of these differences. It is also possible that those who have had difficulty losing weight are more likely to experience the cold that you describe, both due to a sluggish thyroid, but this is true only in theory.

Do you feel especially colder after you eat? This can be attributed to shift in circulation of blood from the whole body to the GI tract to aid in digestion. And it is also true that when you lose weight, no matter by what approach to eating you adhere to, you are losing insulation.

Hope this info warms you up a bit!

I am hardly every cold. But last October, I was counting Weight Watcher points and doing low carb. It ended up being low fat in the process. I was freezing that whole week. As soon as I added an appropriate amount of oils/dressing back into my food plan the chills stopped.

I get cold when I don't eat enough. It is miserable to even walk down the cold food aisle in the store when I am that cold. After all calories = heat.

wow

Hmmm I thought it was only ME, then I saw this thread and couldn't believe it. I get chills when I awaken that I've never gotten before and have to put on my winter clothes in a MODERATELY airconditioned home and have to even turn off the AC in above 80 degree weather and I've NEVER been too cold in my entire life, always too warm.... and I put on my down booties and pull the covers over me and can't MOVE! I've been wearing those giant booties around the house OFTEN in the middle of SUMMER and can't get rid of that chill no matter what I do and my feet feel like they're going to fall off and are in the SNOW but strangely they don't feel that cold to the touch! Then later when I finally push myself out of the bed and eat protein, im burning up from the inside like a furnace and can't rip it all off fast enough. Happens often, mostly when waking up but not ONLY then. This is a very new experience, never happened on this diet before, so I never related it to that, thought it was my sugar condition and talk about it every day on phone with a friend who hasn't understood it either. Glad I'm not alone, but there is still no difinitive answer up there so I guess something different applies to each of us, but this is a first for me..... I even have been taking my temp out of curiosity... 97, 98.1 around there. [not hot & cold menaupause, SURE of that lol]

Anemia will cause one to feel cold even in moderate weather.

I've had cold and hot flashes most of my life, especially on waking up in the morning and dropping off to sleep at night. Put all the covers and socks on to warm up and then tear them all off before they stick to my sweaty body.

Now that I'm getting my thyroid under control with medications, I no longer have them as often. Going through menopause for 12 years hasn't helped either
